Part 1 of Carter's Diary

I must say, I think we went about or removal of Llewella's enemies (and, one suspects, our enemies too, had they come to know of us) in the most sensible way possible. That is, by using planning and forethought. Taking the time to build a variety of useful items for our group. Reconnoitring. Thinking.

I was pleased at the number of useful applications of the Trump that I was able to create in the time available, combining Trumps with useful shadows and other things found using the Pattern. In particular, the Trump-powered assault rifles were most effective.

I am quite surprised that no-one has used such things in Amber before. Could it really be true that there have been no scientists in Amber since its creation? The evidence from both the family and the normal subjects of Amber would certainly appear to point in that direction. Which I find rather strange. I can understand that the people, under the monarchical regime in force in Amber, might not have or might have been guided away from an inclination towards scientific thought. But the family, with its access to all of shadow, has no excuse. However, their loss is, potentially, my gain...

But still, Florimel and her brood were removed, in a way that indicates the inevitable triumph of brains over brawn. Dividing them up. Killing them one by one in a variety of places and a variety of ways. Quite satisfactory, and hopefully something which now leaves us free of any perceived debt to Llewella.

The only problem which I foresee is the way in which the others (with the possible exception of Mr Giles) appear to be reverting more and more to their former, Amberite, selves and losing, more and more, what it was which made them loyal citizens of the United States. I continue to be glad that such is not happening to me, to be of the opinion that I chose entirely correctly when I completed my assaying of the Pattern.

And as such, I cannot help but think that, if they can, they will have Amber return to its ancient status quo, a feudal monarchy ruled by a master race.

How quickly some forget. They appear to have gained a little power, and now they have lost the ideals of democracy that kept us going for so long at home. To become, almost, the Nazis against whom we fought for so long. A shocking and depressing revelation, one I wish I had not had to endure.

But I am afraid that I cannot stand by and see the entire universe continue to be ruled by an autocratic government not too dissimilar to that of the Nazis, which we opposed so strongly at home. A universe based entirely on physical, rather than moral, superiority. A universe ruled by those who were lucky enough to be born into a certain family, with no mandate or support from the people they rule over. I did not learn, and fight, so much in order to allow that to be so in one world, let alone in all of them.

So, what can I do to ensure that this is not the situation for all eternity?

Unless it is possible to sway the rest of the family of Amber to my point of view, then I think that a new Alliance For Democracy will be necessary. One, I think, based across the many worlds of the universe, with the intention of establishing equality and democracy throughout all the worlds. For all. An alliance to ensure that Amber, while it may be the literal centre of things, is not then the autocratic ruler of everything.

It is, I think, a good way to proceed. A logical, if not, perhaps, sensible way to proceed. I have so many fascinating new fields of study ahead of me and, I think, a cause to which to apply whatever I may learn...

However, I cannot help but think that if I do act in this way, to establish democracy in the universe, then I shall inevitably come into conflict with the rest of the team. With the rest of the family. So I shall have to be careful. Work slowly, but also surely. Subordinate my science to the greater good (though this will not necessarily be a great sacrifice, things having always been like that at home).

Reverting somewhat, it would seem, to Sand's former life, one isolated from the rest of the family. Though I must do my best not to appear to be suspiciously isolating myself from the rest of the family. However, based on what they know of me, and, indeed, my natural inclinations, research alone should provide a more than adequate excuse if any questions are asked.

And I shall need allies. Home would appear to be an ideal source of such, the people there being on the physical and intellectual level of the family of Amber. For this reason, and because I consider it the best thing for home, I shall have to do what I can to ensure that a Pax Americana is established there. That the people there are educated as to the true state of the universe. That the population grows (with magical assistance, if necessary) to support this effort, and that technology grows with it, to ensure that stability remains. If necessary I shall import such technology from other worlds.

However, I shall have to be careful and see how much attention the others pay to home before deciding on exactly what to do there.

But home alone is not enough. One world alone is far from sufficient, against the powers of the likes of Ms Rosenberg. This endeavour, should it come to be necessary, requires an alliance of many worlds, both those like home, where the people are a match for those of the family of Amber, and others, where they are not. After all, if I only allow those who are a match for the family of Amber to participate, how, then, am I any different from the elitists of the rest of the family?

If possible, allowing those of shadow to gain the powers of the Pattern would be a - even the - great step towards equality. But even if that should prove to be impossible, there are other alternatives. Teaching them the powers of the Trump and of Magic, for example. Providing creatures or other entities capable of traversing shadow for them, for another.

And I shall also attempt to use - adjust - the multi-dimensional wave-fronts in shadow to reduce the power of Amber and make it and shadow more and more alike. The reverse of what Florimel and her brood were attempting. Though, one hopes, if possible, to do it in a more subtle and effective fashion than she.

Based on what I observed in Amber, a proper scientific study of magic and the other powers has also never been performed. With such, who knows how far we may go should it become necessary (and I certainly hope it does not)? We shall see.

And perhaps, in time, I may, by one means or another, succeed...
