THE KNIGHTS OF THE SILVER FLAME

The Knights of the Silver Flame are the officers and elite forces of the military of Purity, commanding legions of normal troops most of whom are also fanatically loyal to the Silver Flame. All Knights gain their powers by bathing in the Silver Flame on the top of the main temple in Flameholm on Purity. This is a ritual of great significance and is accompanied by celebrations, feasting and blood sacrifice in order to keep the Flame strong. Before a person is made a Knight they have to prove their fanatical devotion to the Knights and to bringing the purity of the Silver Flame to all. They also have to prove themselves expert warriors in a series of gruelling tests which only a few survive.

The Knights emerge from the Flame physically changed, with a variety of strange powers. Their blood becomes flecked with silver, their skin gains a slight silver hue and their eyes also become silver. They are all stronger, tougher and faster than a normal human. In addition, each Knight gets at least one other power, although precisely what varies from Knight to Knight, apparently at the whim of the Flame. These extra powers include the ability to cloud others perceptions so as to become almost invisible, to inflict pain or hallucinations on others, to read information from anothers mind (always a difficult task) or to communicate with another Knight with the same ability. A very few Knights have some kind of almost precognitive danger sense. These powers more than make up for the Knights lack of advanced technology and have a range of about 50 yards on both Purity and Tan'Shakar.

The Keeper of the Flame is the most powerful of the Knights; she has all of the extra powers it is possible for a Knight to have, at somewhat more powerful levels. She lives in the main temple at Flameholm, and generally only leaves it for some truly exceptional reason.

The banner and symbol of the Knights of the Silver Flame is a stylized silver flame on a scarlet ground.
