CREATIVITY

Note that this power has not, as yet, been play-tested, so I have no idea how balanced, or otherwise, it may actually be.

Creativity is an idea for combining Magic and Technology into single power, given the assumption that they are each different ways of achieving the same effect.

In most shadows with sentient inhabitants, those inhabitants attempt to harness their world's natural forces and materials to improve their lives. These can include fire, raw materials for making artefacts (both of these eventually leading to technology), and magic. And although the ways and means of doing so may vary greatly, at their core they all share a fundamental similarity, in that in cases the natural forces are manipulated by the creativity of living things, using their knowledge of how things work in a given shadow.

Of course, how things work, how one achieves a given end, and how long this takes, all vary greatly from shadow to shadow. However, in general, the longer things take to do, the more permanent they will tend to be.

For example, even with a deep knowledge of technology it might take years to build a gun from scratch, from prospecting for and mining metal, refining it, building the tool to build the tools to build the gun. However, at each stage there will be created tools and facilities that can be re-used in other projects. Even so, it might be simpler to find some locals and appropriate their technology...

Magic, on the other hand, tends to be much more self-contained. One simply casts the spell and created the Wand of Firebolts (or whatever), getting a result much faster than with technology. Although the knowledge of magic may be shared and re-used, there are much less likely to be any re-usable intermediate magics or spin-off magics, and no benefits from mass production. As such, worlds which depend on magic may well tend to have that magical power concentrated in the hands of an elite, with the rest of the populace non-magical, as opposed to the situation on a technological world, where said technology tends to trickle down until it is spread over the whole populace.

The first part of this power, understanding the creativity of a single shadow, is essentially the initiate gaining a detailed education in the laws of nature (and how they translate into magic and/or technology) in a single shadow. From this point, they can broaden their education into how the laws of nature vary across a range of closely related shadows. This then gives the initiate a feel for the laws of nature in a wider range of shadows, first a broad range of related shadows (for example, the Golden Circle of Amber or the Black Zone of Chaos) and then for any shadow.

In terms of points expenditure, the power of Creativity thus divides into four levels, as follows, with each level giving the initiate a more and more general understanding of creativity across shadow:

UNDERSTANDING OF A SINGLE SHADOW (5 points) - understanding the applications of the laws of nature in a single shadow, by way of experiment and education.
UNDERSTANDING RELATED SHADOWS (5 points) - understanding the applications of the laws of nature in a range of closely related shadows, also by way of experiment and education.
CREATIVITY IN MANY SHADOWS (5 points) - by this point the initiate is beginning to be able to 'feel' the properties of shadow as they relate to creative endeavours, across a wide range of related shadows.
CREATIVITY IN ALL SHADOWS (5 points) - at this point the initiate can feel how creativity works in any shadow, anywhere, from Amber to the Courts of Chaos (and perhaps beyond).

Creativity is different from Sorcery in that things such as the racking of spells are only a local phenomenon, and the products of creativity are much less transferable across shadow. In some places magic is only do-able by way of a long, slow ritual. In others it is a hugely powerful instantly-summonable force. In some places only short bursts of magic, the equivalent of Power Words, are possible. In others magic can only be used by implanting it into material objects, in the equivalent of Empowerment. Or some mix of these things will be the case. Likewise, in some places too technology will be immediately obtainable from the local people, while in others it can only be developed over time.
