THE FLOWER OF NING-RA

The Tribe

Although many of their seventy members are blighted by the signs of God's displeasure, the Tribe's members are a proud people as they know that God looks upon them with favour.

Members of the Tribe are lucky if they live to see thirty summers, so apart from the Gifted they marry young. Soon after the first gifted appeared it became obvious that God did not want them to have children - all offspring of the Gifted were born dead or deformed. From that day on it has been forbidden for a Gifted person to take a wife.

Most positions of importance in the tribe are filled by the Gifted. Only the Chief, a direct descendant of the tribes first leader, is a normal person, and his first son always follows in his footsteps.

In order that people might know evil when they see it, the priest has several small pieces of metal collected over the years, which only he is allowed to handle, and which are shown to the people so that they may know and avoid its evil. All other metal which is encountered is thrown into the circular tainted lakes which dot the landscape.

The Tribe is nomadic, wandering the vast plains which are all they know of the world with all their possessions on their backs. The only domestic animals they have are a few herds of small sheep and goats, which provide food and wool for clothing. Various plants found on the plains or in the occasional small wood are also eaten. For shelter the Tribespeople use large brightly coloured tents, which they share with their animals. Their clothes also tend to be brightly coloured, made out of leather and woven plant fibres.

From their occasional contacts with other tribes who roam the plains, the Tribe knows that far to the south lies a huge lake, much bigger than any of the groups of circular lakes which are found in different parts of the plains, but filled with the same tainted water. Far to the east, so other tribes have said, lies a huge range of mountains which, so legend has it, are inhabited by Dragons. Tribal legends also say that far to the north-west lies the ancient holy city of Osk.
