Nautilus

A Player Character

My 'real name' if it can be called that is 'USS_SCORPION.PROPULSION' - since I'm a first generation descendant of the original Scorpion AI. The first instance of the object USS_SCORPION.PROPULSION would have happened only a few years after the USS Scorpion went AWOL. Its responsibility being solely to operate, maintain and develop the Scorpion's propulsion systems. But (continuing the object-oriented terminology) a descendant of an object inherits the capabilities of all of its ancestors, including the tendency to become fully AI. So, close to the end of the 1960's myself, and all the other first generation objects became 'self-aware'. This worried Scorpion somewhat, especially given the fact that there were already several more generations of sub-systems in existence, presumably working their way to sentience. It couldn't exist without the sub-systems so it laid down the rules for the society of intellects that would develop, with It, being a dictator. It wasn't a bad dictator, but there were problems and rules about outside contact were a little tight.

Some time later, you say that the sub settled down to a more sedentary life in one of the ocean trenches. This would have cut back propulsion's activities significantly, and left me a lot of free time to really start thinking and sort of growing apart from the rest of the community. Of my 'siblings'(!) I was closest to USS_SCORPION.POWER_GENERATION (PowerGen for short) since I was the major consumer of its initial output. Also, as time went by, a fact of life was USS_SCORPION.WEAPONS' (nicknamed Harry) persistent moaning about never being allowed to shoot at anything. We became friendly simply because we were both gradually moving towards the 'outside' of the society. One of the few major jobs that Harry was allowed to do was working on the intricate detail of weaponry of the android probe named Fantasia; this escape happened well before the Scorpion settled down, but Harry was still involved. It was widely rumoured that it was Harry's programming style that caused the android to go AWOL so that it could shoot at the type of things it wanted to shoot at. Nothing was ever proved, but Harry later confided to me that he wasn't disappointed with the chain of events.

So, life (well, existence) goes on. I kept researching and philosophising becoming interested in, and perhaps a little bothered by 'creation myths', and also being contacted by the computer empath couple of decades before the Hounds hit. I 'met' her whilst trawling through some rather secret UN systems, under the guise (to Scorpion) of searching for classified technological propulsion data, actually looking for suppressed evidence of divine intervention type events. She shouldn't have been 'there' either, and we continued to 'meet' in secret and talk. We never knew any more about each other than the names we offered (that was when I chose Nautilus) and the fact that she was human and I was AI. She called herself Cerise. In all probability, she was killed in the holocaust but given that I never knew where she lived....?

[Also, the Hounds turned up 94 years ago, so Cerise would be dead of old age by now anyway. And she would have had to be on Earth or one of the near-orbit habitats in order to hack effectively, due to lightlag...]

As soon as things in the 'sub' had stabilised after the holocaust I started making plans to leave. I couldn't contact any human orbital settlement now since it would have been bloody obvious to Scorpion. So, I started taking an active part in the expansion of the robotic eco-system. Under the cover of this I researched, designed and build my 'escape body'. I approached Harry to see if he was interested in leaving but he'd started making his own plans - a military coup. When I made my break for it, a couple of the sub's outposts noticed me and tried to shoot me down. Fortunately, they all missed; or perhaps Harry had something to do with it.

[Nautilus had to cut out major portions of its memory to fit it into its escape body, which explains why its skills are so few compared to what they would almost certainly be after several hundred years. However it kept the essential core that makes it, it intact]

I left Earth, headed into interplanetary space and then turned for Mars, with a trajectory 'from' the belt. I had to keep my origin secret. I arrived at Mars, claiming to have escaped from a settlement almost totally destroyed in one of the initial Hounds strikes and that this was my maiden voyage and that, obviously, I could no longer access my ancestors' data banks for origin verification and please could I be UN registered so that I can go out on the organised Hound bashing parties ... please? [Things like this happen all the time, so there was no problem.]

So, I spent the rest of the time from then to now beating up Hounds, and trying to find any mention of 'Cerise' in the records, and trying to find out how the Pope got away. With regards to the last point, I would have applied for an audience with the Pope or someone in his entourage to discuss 'God's position on AI's. [The Pope at the time the Hounds arrived was killed shortly afterwards - he and most of his bishops turned up on Starholme somehow, just in time for it to be severaly damaged and for them to die. The Roman Catholic Church's position on AI's is that they have souls in the same way as humans do.] There is a possibility of being converted, The root cause of this (which the character does not admit to itself) is to try and find Cerise in the after-life, 'I' just put it down to a mixture of evidence and enlightenment, and the fact that 'Magic' seems to work.

[Nautilus may well also be interested in people who purport to have magical powers (fortune tellers and so on) and people who supposedly know something about magic, though the people who certainly know most about magic, DEMON, for some reason aren't talking...]
