The Trans-Imperium Police Authority (TIPA) is an Imperium-wide police agency whose task is to monitor and deal with threats to the Imperium as a whole, and interstellar (inter-governmental) stability at a local level. This includes threats such as terrorism and certain types of smuggling.
They are based along the X-boat routes with a small office, averaging about ten people per office, at each point on the X-boat network. They have links to local law enforcement and a net of local paid informants (often the likes of starship captains). They also pay specialists when their knowledge is needed.
The members of the TIPA are recruited from the best of local law enforcement, but are usually posted far from their home worlds, to bring new perspectives to the TIPA's operations and to avoid any local biases.
