The Dinom System

Dinom | 1811 | D-100535-A | Ni, Va | 201 | G0Ia | Im

This world is described in detail in the adventure 'Across The Bright Face' which forms part of the Traveller Double Adventure 2 supplement.

Dinom is a small airless world in far orbit [Orbit 12]around the central star of the Dinom system. Dinom's star, Ekota, is a very large, very bright type G0Ia giant [Mass 12, luminosity 16.09] visible throughout the sub-sector, and would not normally have planets. Dinom itself is a rogue planet originally a satellite of the system's gas giant, Rullis (which has no other satellites). It is now trapped in the Trojan position of Rullis, and trails the planet in its orbit about the star. [Rullis is size 160, density 0.16, mass 1280, gravity 3.2]

The planet's polar axis lies parallel to the plane of its orbit (like Uranus in the Solar System) and currently extends towards the central star Ekota. This has been the case for 200 years, and will be for another 200 years, totalling a quarter of Dinom's 1600 year orbit around its star. Because of this Dinom's northern hemisphere is in constant light while its southern hemisphere is in constant darkness, and covered with the frozen gas which forms Dinom's atmosphere when its axis points roughly at right angles to the star. For this reason, the fact that Dinom rotates on its axis in 14.2 hours is currently irrelevant to the amount of light any part of Dinom receives from Ekota. Dinom's equator is a zone of constant twilight and moderate temperatures, while temperatures drop to almost absolute zero on the Dark Face and rise to more than 260 degrees C in the centre of the Bright Face (this is hot enough to melt tin).

Because of its dense core, origin as a rogue moon, and the large thermal stresses it endures, Dinom has considerably more vulcanism and groundquake activity than might normally be expected for a world of its size [Seismic stress 7].

Gravity is about 0.2 times that of Earth [Mass 0.003125, density 1.6, heavy core].

Dinom's population of 230000 is concentrated in three large cities, Rhylan, Medianne and Napan, which house ore-processing centres. They are linked by a monorail, which also has spurs going off to mines deep in the bright and dark faces of Dimon. Each city is governed by a Board of Directors answering to the shareholder-owners of the ore-processing centres, who number about ten per city. Token representation for non-shareholders is also provided. The three cities send representatives to Rhylan for the World Board, which also has about 10% representation for the non-city dwellers. The Board is responsible for interstellar relations, systems defence, industrial production and Imperial contact.

The location of Dinom is a problem as far as visitors is concerned. Because both it and Rullis are in orbit 12 of Ekota, more than 307 AU from the star, even at 6G of acceleration it takes more than 20 days to travel from one to the other in normal space. This means that people in the system to refuel at Rullis are very unlikely to also stop at Dinom. For this reason the Dinom Corporation have placed an advertising satellite in orbit around Rullis to sell their services to passing travellers.

The goods which Dinom exports consist of ores, radioactives, crystals, metals and non-metals.

Note that some details of Dinom (in particular its star type) have been changed from this in the MegaTraveller Referees Manual to make it agree more with the description in 'Across The Bright Face'.
