AMBER UNDER SIEGE
THE HIERARCHY OF THE UNIVERSE
As Circaea understands it, the hierarchy of things in the universe is:
- Abyss (the Father; Nothingness)
- Yggdrasil (the Mother; Everything)
- Nimbus (Life Potential; Abyss + Yggdrasil; the product of the first and only conflict between Abyss and Yggdrasil, in which each blow was a creative rather than a destructive act; together it Abyss and Yggdrasil make the triumvirate of Nothing-Everything-Life Potential)
- Shadow (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; Shadow formed from the touch of its three progenitors)
- Centre (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential + Shadow; formed when the Tree of Yggdrasil was planted in the centre of Shadow; this crystallised structure out of the previously undifferentiated stuff of Shadow, giving Location and Separation; Potential was also added to the centre of shadow)
- Tessaract (Ideal Location; this makes each place unique even as it makes them one; with Separation it helps keep the main areas of Shadow divided into their different parts, so that [for example] Abyssal Shallows do not fall into Abyss, or Undershadow does not merge with Shadow making too much hyper-reality)
- Separation (this makes each location be in different places)
- Abyssal Shallow (Shadow + Abyss; formed where raw Shadow mixes with Abyss; this is the 'front edge' of creation, where creation is happening spontaneously as a by-product of interaction between Abyss and Yggdrasil)
- Dark Shadow (Abyssal Shallow + Shadow; formed when Abyssal Shallows mixed with Shadow)
- Twilight Shadow (Dark Shadow + Shadow; formed when Dark Shadow mixed with Shadow)
- Undershadow (Shadow + Yggdrasil; formed where raw Shadow mixed with Yggdrasil)
- Primal Shadows (Shadow + Undershadow; formed when Undershadow mixed with Shadow)
- Realm Shadows (Primal Shadows + Shadow; formed when Primal Shadow mixed with Shadow)
- Mental Shadows (Shadow + Life Potential; formed where raw Shadow mixed with Nimbus)
- Country of the Mind (Mental Shadows + Shadow; formed when Mental Shadows mixed with Shadow)
- Shadows of the Mind (County of the Mind + Shadow; formed when the Country of the Mind mixed with Shadow)
- Proto-Matter (Abyssal Shallow + Under Shadow + Shadow; formed where its progenitors mixed; it is rich in energy and physical reality, but without real form; this is the source of Conjured things, Powers, and Qualities; Conjurers pull out and give shape to this highly charged state of formless matter with their power; other powers do the same, but Conjuration is the only one that does it directly; Proto-Matter is everywhere to be drawn on; there are entities that live in it, but not life as known to others because it is life independent of matter and energy, rare emotions and desires playing at the dreams they watch of others, sedentary by nature watching and living what little they do through the dreams of others)
- Shadow People (Mental Shadow + Under Shadow + Shadow; formed where its progenitors mixed, they are physically real, malleable entities; some are made by the interactions of powers spontaneously generating 'small' life while others are directly created by other entities)
- Phantoms etc. (Abyssal Shallow + Mental Shadow + Shadow; formed where its progenitors mixed, they are high energy, entities in whom everything is malleable)

- Chimera (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; their daughter; formed from Nimbus' power giving life to the dark parts of shadow; along with Champion/Martyr, one of the first generation of children of Abyss, Yggdrasil and Nimbus)
- Weirmonken (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Chimera + Nimbus + Shadow; created by Champion/Martyr when it was inspired by creation of the dwelling places of the Dragon, Serpent, Muse, Unicorn and Phoenix; it is a living place of Shadow which joined with her nature)
- Champion/Martyr (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; their son; formed from Nimbus' power giving life to the light parts of shadow; along with Chimera, one of the first generation of children of Abyss, Yggdrasil and Nimbus; very extreme; attempted to kill Chimera due to his dislike of the dark)
- Church of Obsession (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Champion/Martyr + Nimbus + Shadow; created by Champion/Martyr when it was inspired by creation of the dwelling places of the Dragon, Serpent, Muse, Unicorn and Phoenix)
- Elemental Earth (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; the Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Void Elementals were the second generation of children of Abyss, Yggdrasil and Nimbus; they were intended to be life that would continue rather than being as extreme as Champion/Martyr; after becoming involved in the second fight between Champion/Martyr and Chimera, they split into positive and negative-aspected entities, then tried to gain more power by merging with Shadow, falling into near-stasis)
- Shadows of Earth
- Terranites (Earth Beings; Elemental Earth copied the idea of creating life from Nature; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent', such as Dwarves)
- Elemental Air (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential)
- Shadows of Air
- Melodites (Air Beings; Elemental Air copied the idea of creating life from Nature; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent', such as Djinni)
- Elemental Fire (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential)
- Shadows of Fire
- Infernians (Fire Beings; Elemental Fire copied the idea of creating life from Nature; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent', such as Salamanders)
- Elemental Water (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential)

- Liquirians (Water Beings; Elemental Water copied the idea of creating life from Nature; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent', such as Merpeople)
- Elemental Void (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential)

- Empirians (Void Beings; Elemental Void copied the idea of creating life from Nature; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent')
- Nature (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; the element of Balance and Neutrality; the Nature, Light and Dark Elementals were the third generation of children of Abyss, Yggdrasil and Nimbus, created the break the stasis caused by their elemental predecessors; they are elementals of 'attitude' as much as anything else, and as such were able to use their blessings to assist the original five Elementals to re-integrate their dual natures, and to stop the conflict between Champion/Martyr and Chimera; with this integration the elementals had fuller personalities and very much their own minds and so were resistant to attempts by Chimera and Champion/Martyr to have them war in their names)
- Living Things (the children of Nature, all kinds of animals and so on; these differ from the beings created by the other elementals in that they are made to be part of the shadow; they are integrated with and part of the natural world of their shadow, rather than being something imposed from outside which does not necessarily fit in as well)
- Reproduction (the blessing of Nature and Nimbus on the children of Nature)
- Evolution (an inadvertent by-product of the blessing of Reproduction)
- Natural Selection (an inadvertent by-product of the blessing of Reproduction)
- Elemental Light (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; the element of the Positive)
- Shadows of Light
- Illuminites (Beings of Light; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent')
- Elemental Dark (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; the Elemental of Negativity)
- Shadows of Darkness
- Shadites (Beings of Dark; creatures and people like beings relating to the element of their 'parent')
- Serpent (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; their son; the Serpent, Unicorn, Dragon, Phoenix and Muse were the fourth generation of children of Abyss, Yggdrasil and Nimbus)
- Cavern of the Serpent (Abyssal Shallow + Serpent + Shadow)
- Pattern of Logrus (Unicorn + Serpent; the first power made by the twin brother and sister of Unicorn and Serpent; it contained both Order and Chaos as two sides of the same coin; Order is Chaos at a distance so that the 'grand design' of it can be seen, while Chaos is Order seen from close by, where the details overwhelm the overall design and the visible Order becomes lost)
- Unicorn (Abyss + Yggdrasil + Life Potential; their daughter)
- Grove of the Unicorn (Unicorn + Under Shadow + Shadow)
- Unicorn of Amber (Unicorn + Serpent)

- The Primal Race (Life Potential + Dragon + Serpent + Unicorn + Phoenix + Muse; the original inhabitants of the First Empire, the 'Childrens Empire', they partook of a tiny bit of Potential of all of the children of the Father and Mother; they were spilt into smaller groups under the guidance of the Serpent, Unicorn, Dragon, Phoenix and Muse; they also adopted and mated with shadow folk to produce half-breed children; once they learned from one of the Primal creatures the people were 'Touched', and their children were not like the base stock race but became Dragosians, Chaosians, and so on; the genetic changes due to interactions with reality shaping powers were passed on to their children and then bred true for three generations after which the imprint faded if not renewed by continued use of that power; over time Champion/Martyr caused the fall of the Childrens Empire by enhancing the divisions and differences caused by the splitting of the Primal Race into the followers of the Dragon, Serpent, Unicorn, Phoenix and Muse; some of them followed Champion/Martyr in attempting to destroy Chimera; this caused Chimera and Nimbus to break the Childrens Empire, forcing many of the survivors to go out and formed their various kingdoms along the various axes of the universe)
- Dragosians (Primal Race + Dragon; there are currently nine Dragosians, who are the Clan Minds of the race)
- Travic (historian and priest of the Dragon)

- Pattern (Unicorn of Amber + the Dworkin; alone from out of Pattern of Logrus after the Dworkin stole the Jewel and made Amber and Sapphire; this was long after the breaking of the Childrens Empire; there are five elemental reflections of the Primal Pattern)
- Pattern of Amber (Pattern of Amber + Oberon; the 'top' side of the Primal Pattern in the Kingdom of Amber; the current Pattern of Amber is based on the old one but is not actually the same Pattern, as Oberon drew it in a different style to that of his father)
- Earth Pattern (the elemental reflection of the Primal Pattern, in Amber)
- Air Pattern (in Tir-Na Nog'th)
- Fire Pattern (Pattern of Amber + Finndo; in Sol'Na Reg'th, hidden under Amber and Sapphire respectively; it is no longer a reflection of the Pattern of Amber, but was changed by Finndo to be a Realm in its own right; he claimed that there was something wrong with the Sol'Na Reg'th Pattern, which he then attempted to fix)
- The Lion (Pattern of Amber + Finndo; the Icon of the Fire Pattern)
- Water Pattern (in Rebma)
- Void Pattern (the Dark Pattern or Shadow Pattern, which exists in the Dark Realm; unlike the other Patterns its realm is empty of all but darkness and fear, with those few things that do live in it fearing the Void Pattern for, instead of producing Order as the others do, it feeds on Order, like a black hole sucking everything into it to consume)
- Oberon (Unicorn of Amber + the Dworkin)
- Elders of Amber (Oberon + Shadow People)
- Youngers of Amber (like Circaea; Elders of Amber + Shadow People)
- Pattern of Sapphire (the 'bottom' side of the Primal Pattern in the Empire of Sapphire, which encompasses all of the 'Core' Shadows where reflections of the Primal Pattern are found; each of those places has a city with a duplicate castle that the Empress travels from and to, dividing her time between all of them; they are all called the City of Sapphire)
- Earth Pattern (in Ter'Rainia)

- Logrus (Unicorn of Amber + the Dworkin; alone from out of Pattern of Logrus; with the splitting of the universe into the two realms of Amber and Sapphire, there was a corresponding split into the Courts of Chaos in the Amber universe and the Empire of Chaos in the Sapphire universe)
- Original God-Fey Race (Primal Race + Muse; the Fey and the Gods were originally one race, but now are genetically two separate races following a civil war shortly after the exodus of races from what is now the Courts of Chaos; this war also caused the splitting of the original axis into separate Godly and Fey axes of existence)
