SWEARING LOYALTY

The swearing of loyalty to Amber is not a trival event for anyone, and even less so for a member of the Amber royal family.

Because of this, it is always a big event, done in the Throne Room of Castle Amber, in front of the assembled family and nobles of the city of Amber (a big crowd!). The person involved swears to:

The items which are sworn to are kept short and sweet so as to avoid, as much as is possible, having the words twisted by someone to their own ends.

Once the above oath has been sworn, in return Random swears to :

There are also a number of unspoken implications in the oaths which are sworn. These include the King not being able to demand military service from those who have sworn loyalty to him (though it would not look good if someone was asked and refused), and the King not being able to imprison his subjects for an extended period without charge or trial.

It is also implied that the King will safeguard the rights and privileges due those who are members of the royalty or nobility of Amber, and that he will protect all Amberites, regardless of their having sworn loyalty or not, and whether they are nobles, commoners, or anything in between.

Note also that the Law of Amber extends throughout shadow (whether shadow knows it or not). This means that one cannot act against the Realm while out in shadow and later claim that it was not a crime as they were not in Amber itself.
