Over The Ten Years, 103-113 PPF
Prologue Part 2 Index Session 1.1
- Evander walks the Pattern and likes it so much he does it again. Several times, in fact. Tristan thinks, from Trump scrying, that Evander is not Brand's son, but possibly distantly related to Benedict.
Evander spends a good deal of time off exploring shadow.
- Tristan, acting in the name of prison reform, sets up some otherwise uninhabited single-sex prison/exile shadows where the prisoners can build new lives, or whatever. But some prisoners go missing (as Tristan discovers on some of his periodic checks of the prison shadows).
After attempting to negotiate with whoever was responsible via birds of his desire, he uses the Pattern to send forces after the escapees - velociraptors, Martian war machines, plague rats and ninjas of his desire, among other things.
After this he uses his Advanced Pattern Imprint to erase his tracks through shadow, and prisoners stop going missing. Caine says not to worry about it, although Tristan is not sure it's all him. It's definitely a family member though - recruiting from among Amber's worst criminals?
The escapees include:
- GENERAL ANDREAS ALLEKAR; a general from the Golden Circle shadow of Akash who committed treason in his home shadow but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- CABRAL ATIMYA; an arsonist.
- FALLARON BLAND; a terrorist from the Golden Circle shadow of Samatha, one of two who tried to poison Amber's water supply.
- LUTHRO BOREAN; a bandit.
- PERRUND BURIN; an arsonist.
- ARANA CASTUL; an Archmage from the Golden Circle shadow of Diega who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- BELMON CHARLES; a corrupt lawyer.
- COLONEL KILLEAST DINESS; a war criminal
from the Golden Circle shadow of Jorrem.
- LUREN FAROSS; an Amber crime boss.
- GIDEON FELDANE; a noble duellist, jailed for the murder of an opponent who he could not beat otherwise.
- ALLISTA FOY; an assassin who worked throughout the Golden Circle.
- ANGELINA HALIN; a female spy from the Golden Circle shadow of Issarak.
- CAPTAIN HUON; a pirate on the seas of the Golden Circle.
- LILLINA JADRAX; a female poisoner; she married men for money then killed them.
- CAPTAIN RISHART JANZEN; a pirate on the seas of the Golden Circle.
- KENTON JERITIC; a slaver.
- FALANTI JESS; a blackmailer; blackmailed the father of Callum du Motier.
- ARNFEL LEWICH; a seditionist, one of a group trying to stir up the population of Amber against the Royal Family.
- JARITH MAL; a corrupt lawyer.
- CALLUM DU MOTIER; an impoverished Amber noble who turned to smuggling.
- ABRAXAS NANGONYA; a serial killer who Caine had a hard job catching.
- SERGEANT ALLEBARD PENDRASS; a war criminal from the Golden Circle shadow of Belsalem.
- CAPTAIN GIDEON RAVENHEART; a wrecker, who showed false lights to lure ships onto the rocks and loot the wreckage.
- LORD JUBAL REIN; the younger brother of Fletcher Rein, who was convicted of using necromancy and the Black Arts (Necromancy is not considered the same as other types of Magic).
- NAYAH RELAG; a murderer.
- TAKATTA RHEE; a terrorist from the Golden Circle shadow of Samatha, one of two who tried to poison Amber's water supply.
- LINGARA SMEE; a murdereress.
- PRINCE BERRIN STILLINGFLEET; a deposed prince from the Golden Circle shadow of Stillingfleet who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- GENERAL SHELIN TAZIAT; a general from the Golden Circle shadow of Dushku who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- PRINCESS CALLISTA URDAN; a deposed princess from the Golden Circle shadow of Mastrania who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- CAPTAIN URLEYN VARDAN; a corrupt captain of the Amber City Watch.
- PRINCE ZABUR VUKUS; a deposed prince from the Golden Circle shadow of Koljeval who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- PRINCESS TIRELA WINSART; a deposed princess from the Golden Circle shadow of Merab (one of the more obvious shadows of Amber) who committed treason there but who for political reasons was given to Amber to get rid of rather than executed at home.
- SULFANE ZAKOJI; a seditionist, one of a group trying to stir up the population of Amber against the Royal Family.
- TYGMA ZEAMON; a murderer.
- Owen inspires a number of reforms of Amber's housing laws.
- Shadow becomes a generally nicer, more just and more law-abiding place, as Amber does the same.
- Beltaine suffers recurring bouts of her post-Pattern illness. After a while she is almost bedridden by it. During a visit by Owen, her rooms, containing Beltaine, Owen and Beltaine's servants are entrapped in an impenetrable wall of, it seems, solid air. They can be seen within the 'bubble', frozen. They move when not being observed, and seem to be repeating themselves in normal household actions. Those of the elders who were there claim it seems similar to the occasion when Benedict lost his mechanical arm in the throne room of Amber. Tristan and Random (with the Jewel) get a definite impression that it is a Tir-Na Nog'th thing, and a sense of change in it, too, perhaps like a chrysalis. Various things are tried to free Beltaine and Owen:
- The Jewel has no noticeable effect on the bubble.
- Tristan cannot shadow shift into it.
- Walking the Pattern and trying to teleport there leads to the person 'sliding off' the bubble (that's what it feel like) and appearing outside; likewise with the Tir-Na Nog'th Pattern.
- The people inside the 'bubble' cannot be trumped. Nor can the rooms themselves. Trump readings do not seem to work.
- Brute force doesn't work
- Magic (such as it is in Amber) has no effect at all.
- Things of desire cannot be sent into the bubble.
- Looking in Tir-Na Nog'th gives the result that:
- The rooms themselves can be found, but yield no clues, and cannot be interacted with, even with the Jewel.
- Beltaine has not been seen in Tir-Na Nog'th.
- An Owen-ghost has been seen in Tir-Na Nog'th, but cannot be interacted with, even with the Jewel. He has been seen doing a number of things, fighting, making war, making peace, drinking, being philanthropic etc.
The place is now kept out of the public eye, and under guard.
- Ibrahim sets up the Royal Horse Guards, light cavalry with magical equipment (as much as works in Amber, anyway), to guard the King and Queen while they are out and about. They are a branch of the Royal Guard, all of whom have been personally checked out by Caine and trained by Ibrahim. All their horses are supplied by Jaheira, Ibrahim's sister.
- Tamarind goes to see the end of the universe - the Abyss. It's still there. The location still drives non-real people mad, even without the Courts hanging over the Abyss.
Tamarind does Trump scrying into the fate of Chaos. The Tower card is prominent - "Destruction". He repeats this by the Abyss and gets the same answer.
Damien thinks Chaos has just sealed itself in.
Tamarind does a Trump scrying regarding the major families of Chaos, rather than the place itself. The cards as laid out are meaningless - like readings on the people who can't be Trumped - Corwin, Merlin, Martin, Beltaine, Owen, Bleys and Fiona.
There is a general expedition to Chaos in Tristan's Castle Corvallin to see if Evander's Chaos Trumps work. Thanks to Tristan it takes them only a week or two to get there. Upon arrival Evander does a Trump scrying under Tamarind's supervision, around one of his Trumps. The response is 'Yes' - whatever the question Evander thought of was.
'Where can she be found,' asks Evander of his cousin. No response (like the reading on the Chaos families). Evander tries Trumping her but doesn't get through, not even with Tamarind's help, and not even with Tristan and Ibrahim helping, too.

They return to Amber.
- Plans begin for the celebration of the centenary of Randoms rule.
- In the last year, a plague of plagues, animal attacks, assassins etc. strikes shadow for a while, some of which are as close as the Golden Circle. People die. Then there is a wave of preventative actions which sweep shadow and do away with this nastiness.
- Damien acquires a velociraptor named Sebek who lives at the Priory; it seems friendlier to Tristan than it is to Damien himself.
- There are a number of murders of officials in Amber city. The new assistant harbourmaster, a senior banker and various others are killed by unknown assailants.
