You were born in Bombay where your father, Sekhar Gowarikar was an engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. You have three brothers, Ranjit, Mahadev and Behramji, one older and two younger and one older sister, Manasa. Your family lived a fairly prosperous life as your father is a fairly senior figure at the Research Centre.
When you were 19 you were visiting your father at the Research Centre when the supervillain Agni attacked. He had radioactive powers and wanted to steal radioactive materials from the Research Centre for his own purposes. His initial attack caused an explosion as cooling pipes ruptured and you were blown into the cooling pond of one of the Centres' nuclear reactors. As you struggled to swim out of the cooling pond you felt yourself change and become suffused with power. You flew up out of the cooling pond and attacking by surprise managed to drive Agni away, at the cost of revealing your powers to everyone there. Medical examination revealed that instead of being fatally poisoned by the radiation your body had somehow absorbed it and used it to energise your new powers.
The Indian government hushed up the incident, but after a few weeks the Indian government tried to recruit you into their service. When your father, who is something of an idealist, refused let you have anything to do with this and threatened to expose these actions to the world press the government backed down. However a few days later a group of people from a Thugee cult tried to kidnap you after hearing about what had happened at the Research Centre. In order to be better protected the family moved to New Delhi, where some members of your and other families, including your childhood betrothed, now lived.
As time went by you learnt the use and limits of your powers, using them to help some of the poor families living in and around the city. Shortly after arriving in New Delhi you were married to your arranged childhood betrothed Govind Shrivastava. Unfortunately over the years he had become a short, not too handsome and generally boring businessman, who disapproved of your self-appointed role as protector of the poor. However this did not stop you continuing in that role whenever you felt it necessary.
Because of your husbands attitude to you and your generally loveless marriage you have found comfort in the arms of another - your husbands far more handsome and dynamic business partner Ardhendu Ravikumar. Neither he or you actively sought what has grown up between you - it just seemed to happen naturally. Both you and he are very careful to conceal their affair from the outside world for fear of the consequences.
With the start of the disasters a few weeks ago India has been very hard hit and you have been very busy helping communities in trouble all over India. With the increased public profile this has brought you have become something of a national symbol. Then, a few days ago you received a letter inviting you to an address near Boston and containing air tickets. Despite the urgent situation in India the letter was persuasive enough that you are now on your way to this rendezvous...
