El Libertador (Emmanuel de Rodriguez)

Born in 1836, Emmanuel de Rodriguez was the second son of an impoverished Spanish noble family which had emigrated to what became Chile in the late 18th century. Since emigrating the family had done fairly well and risen to a high position in Chilean society. From birth, Emmanuel exhibited a cruel streak and a lust for power which outstripped any other member of his family. At the age of 20, after being educated in all the best schools and universities of Europe, he entered the Chilean army as an officer. His intelligence, ruthlessness and lust for power propelled him up the ranks, so that by 1880 he had become General of the whole Chilean army.

When war broke out between Chile, Peru and Bolivia Emmanuel was in command of the attacking army which pushed back Chile's borders. Early in 1882 Emmanuel discovered that he was slowly becoming much stronger and tougher, and one day discovered that he could also generate beams of intense light from his eyes with force enough to kill. Almost single-handedly he brought the war to a close, his own men rallying behind his 'god-given' powers and the opposition fleeing before his might. As the war went on Emmanuel saw that he was destined for greater things than command of an army - with his power he should rule the world! Once the war was over, with the support of his men, he turned the army around and marched on Santiago, taking control the country within days, installing himself as a new leader under the name of The Liberator (El Libertador) and renaming the country the Chilean Empire.

As soon as he was firmly installed on the throne, Emmanuel began to eliminate all opposition, and by about 1885, after a few attempts to end his rule, he was in undisputed control of the country. With his power base assured he turned his eyes abroad. Over the next twenty years his forces took over the neighbouring nations of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Paraguay and Ecuador one by one and established his control over them with the same brutal efficiency he had used in Chile. His ambitions for the rest of South America were thwarted when the remaining nations of the continent banded together against him and formed the SAU. By this time it had become obvious to him and the rest of the world that he was not aging. To Emmanuel this was further proof, if any was needed, of his manifest destiny as master of the world.

Chile remained aloof from the conflicts of WWI and WWII, although both times an unsuccessful take-over attempt was made on the Falkland Islands. With the rise of European fascism in the 1920's and 30's El Libertador allied himself with the German, Japanese and Italian governments as although he had no real faith in their ability to conquer they could be useful stepping stones on his way to world domination. However, when the war ended with the bombing of Guaqui, his capital, Berlin and Tokyo only good fortune enable him to escape with his most loyal cadres and several years later stage a revolt which returned him to power.

Since then he has ruled with the Chilean Empire with his customary iron fist, his rule being punctuated several incidents which have had an effect on world events. The first of these was his giving Albert Zerstoiten a place in the Empire, which after a series of personality clashes with Emmanuel caused him to leave and set up on his own under the name Dr Destroyer. Second was the attempt to blackmail the world into submission in 1971. This was only stopped from escalating into a world war by the timely arrival of Solar Angel, who El Libertador even now bears a grudge against. Thirdly was the invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982, another costly debacle when he was forced to withdraw his forces from the Islands by international pressure. Last, and most recently, was the sending out of the so-called 'Sea-Tanks' to kidnap people from various places around the world. This ended when the Guardians went into the Chilean Empire early in 1990. In the process of rescuing the kidnapped people El Libertador was taken captive and carried into the SAU. When Chilean forces arrived in an attempt to recapture him he was carried off and killed in the depths of the jungle by three members of the Guardians, although his body was recovered and is now embalmed in the throne room of the Palace at Guaqui.

All his life Emmanuel de Rodriguez was a brutal thug with a lust for power. What made him so dangerous was his high intelligence and superhuman abilities which enabled him to take and hold huge areas of land in an iron fist. In his later years he tended to be over-confident and over-reach himself, such as when he attempted to blackmail the world in 1971, which even without Solar Angel's intervention world have ended in the destruction of at least the Chilean Empire and possibly the world, and when he attempted to take on the Guardians almost single-handed when they invaded his palace at Guaqui, leading to his capture and death at their hands.

Throughout all of his rulership of the Chilean Empire Emmanuel's appearance remained the same : a fairly attractive bearded Hispanic man of about forty years old, with a piercing gaze and a generally contemptuous expression on his face. He was never seen in public outside of a Chilean military uniform, usually one loaded down with gold braid and medals of various kinds.
