Designed by SHIPS for Windows III v 15.3
Used for research into jumpspace, misjumps and so on, this is an essentially
disposable unmanned jump-capable ship. It uses drop tanks, and the
pilot/navigator bails out before the jump occurs, leaving the ship to run
entirely under computer control. As such the ship has no life support at
all. The ship is built to be as survivable as possible, with redundancy in
as many systems as possible.
The computer records data during the flight, and if, due to misjump or
whatever, it should find itself in interstellar space will orientate itself
and head for the nearest system, either by jumping there or going via
real-space (using a 1G drive for fifty days will bring the ship up to roughly
1/7th of the speed of light). Depending on the length of time the journey
should take, the ship may shut itself down in flight to save it fuel until
it needs it. Upon arrival in the new system the ship will broadcast to
whoever may be there to be recovered (though the data it carries is highly
encrypted). The Imperial Navy offers a substantial reward for the return of
these research ships, and punishments for those who do not; the ship is
marked as such, and has a recorded message which also drives the point home.
The ship class is named after one of the scientists involved in early Vilani
jump-drive research.
