Caliburn is in fact the Corporate Republic of Caliburn, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lunion Fluid Management LIC. LFM is in part of the SuSAG megacorporation.
LFM is the major employer of the system, and all of its employees are citizens. Other companies which provide support services and so on (including education, healthcare and various other 'non-core' businesses) are licensed/franchised by LFM to operate in the Caliburn system. Their employees are not full citizens, which causes some friction.
The system was originally settled by asteroid miners interested in the only real resource the system has - various organic compounds found in the two asteroid belts and the moons of the system. The company which is now the in-system branch of LFM began as an agglomeration of the original corporations which supplied hydrogen fuel from the system's gas giants to the first settlers of the system (miners and so on), as the systems sun is too weak to allow effective use of solar power. From there they were able to leverage their advantageous position to take control of the whole system, particularly its mining activities, and following which they were taken over by SuSAG. In addition to the asteroid mining, SuSAG use the system for dodgy semi-legal work, which is why that research is done in the Imperium.
Outside of work, LFM does not meddle much in the lives of its employees, which is why the law level is relatively low.
The system is named after the sword of King Arthur (in some legends).
The people of Caliburn are thin and pale-skinned. Habitats tend to be warm and bright inside, as a contrast to the cold and dark outside. Most places have plenty of external lights, too. All local vacc suits come with built-in light intensifier goggles and spotlights.
All orbits are in the outer zone.
The system is defended by six Jump-1 TL 10 SDBs, two based at Camelot, two in the Caliburn Belt and two at the labs on the moons of Clarent. Also most facilities have fixed defences - mainly triple laser turrets and sandcasters. Camelot and the laboratory at Gorre also have one or more missile bays too, and nuclear dampers. Major facilities are run using imported TL15 computers (and are generally at TL15).
The Representative authority is a Ruler with no division of authority, the LFM Vice-President for Caliburn, Mr Kingman Rhee. He does a board of directors to advise him. Others of the board of directors include:
Chief Financial Officer | (John Jemissin) |
Chief Administrative Officer | (Clarald Yminis) |
Vice-President of Research | (Dr Vivian McAndrews) |
PR and Marketing Officer | (Vladimir Smith; in his mid-50's, thin, pale-skinned and bald. His wife is in her 50's, still attractive, and also pale-skinned; he has three children, a boy of 8, a girl of 10 and a boy of 15) |
Legal Officer | (Brian Visnijac) |
Junior Vice-President of Security | (Abrey Tollivarn) |
Goods: Non-Metals (and that's it!)
Big slow balloons of liquid hydrogen fly on trajectories from the refineries at Arthur to the various settlements through the system.
Gorre Town:
All domes are built over a fusion reactor, the biggest in the town dome with smaller ones under the outlying domes.
