My plan to reduce the number of elders hostile (or potentially dangerous) to me continues to go well.

Bleys and Fiona are well out of the way. I still can't believe the others swallowed that fake vision I set up in Tir. Or how seriously everyone took it and how fast they acted on it. I thought much more effort would have been needed to push them into killing Fiona, but it was just so easy. One fake vision provided by me; one 'helpful' spyglass designed by my father. Bleys' sad loyalty to his sister just made him so predictable.

Two down. They really shouldn't have betrayed my father.

Now Caine is out of favour. I knew if I threw enough guilt Random's way he'd get rid of Caine, just to stop me blaming him for what happened. He's lost Martin; he couldn't bear it now if his little girl stopped loving him. Now, hopefully, Caine will overreach himself in some way and thus become a legitimate target in the same way Bleys did.

And with Benedict out of the way, either Damien (who likes me) or Corwin (who's in my debt) should be able to take his place. Even if he decides to come back, I can probably persuade him he owes his return to life to my urgings.

The sudden departure of both Benedict and Caine laid the ground perfectly for father to get permission to walk the Pattern, and make himself more 'useful' to Random.

All in all, I feel much safer than I did a few years ago:

Tristan, Damien and Ibrahim still think I'm a sweet young thing in need of guidance and protection. And Tamarind will never do anything that might make Chalice unhappy. He should prove very useful.
