Kamikase (Divine Wind, Aihara Kenji)

From an upper class rural family who lived near Akita. Possessing air powers, could fly supersonically (study of his powers eventually led the Japanese to develop the first supersonic aircraft) and generate powerful blasts of wind as an attack. Arrogant but loyal to the Emperor and Japan. He developed his powers while caught out in a storm in late 1881 when he suddenly felt the winds becoming part of himself, under his control. Hardly knowing what he was doing he carried himself up into the sky on a blast of air, and only just managed to maintain control over his course. With practise he was able to control the air in order to lift and move objects, as well as generate powerful air jets which could do considerable harm. He discussed his powers with his father, who suggested that he volunteer to serve the Emperor, which he did, and was rapidly accepted as first member and leader of the Emperors Guard. In 1886 his father and a number of his associates tried to use him in a plot to kill the Emperor and restore the old Japan, with the Samurai in charge, but instead of cooperating Kenji turned the conspirators in and they were all executed for treason, even his father. Kenji became much harder after this incident, but continued to serve the Emperor well until his death in the Russian nuclear attacks of 1917.

Kami-no-Hi (Fire-Spirit, Kajiyama Yukiyo)

Female, from a lower class area in the city of Nagoya, born in 1863. Can turn into a vastly impressive superhuman form which can fly and generate powerful plasma bolts. Her beauty, intelligence and charm enabled her to marry a businessman well above her on the social ladder when she was 17, even if he was eight years her senior. She soon proved her worth in helping entertain business clients and even helping to run her husbands business (very much behind the scenes). Late in 1881 an earthquake caused widespread damage to parts of Nagoya, and Yukiyo was trapped in a burning building. Suddenly, as the flames came nearer, she felt a sudden change come over herself, and was suddenly able to ignore the smoke and flames. She was still not strong enough to move the rubble she was trapped under, but as she struggled she suddenly generated a powerful energy beam which blew the wreckage from her. She was easily able to escape the building, and spent hours helping rescue victims of the Earthquake, discovering that she was also able to fly. However, her appearance had also changed; although still beautiful she was now vastly more impressive and had reddish skin and orange-red hair which shifted rose up from her head like a flame. Her eyes also streamed orange-yellow fire. Although initially people ran from her, they overcame their fear when they saw she was there to help. When the worst was finally over Yukiyo found her husband, and privately explained who she was and what had happened. He recognised her after she explained, but obviously didn't relish the thought of living with her as she now was. Afraid of losing him, Yukiyo tried to turn off her powers, and suddenly flicked back into her normal human form. Her husband was hugely relieved, and far more understanding than she had expected him to be. Some time later the government posted notices asking that the 'fire-spirit' came forward. Reluctantly, after being told to do so by her husband, Yukiyo did so, and was told that her government had need of her. After some thought, and a few veiled threats from the representatives, Yukiyo's husband agreed that she should do what they wanted, and Yukiyo joined the Emperors Guard. Although never truly happy there, Yukiyo served the Guard loyally and well. She fought valiantly in WWI, despite being badly wounded in one battle, overcoming a great cultural aversion to doing so. She also fought valiantly in WWI and died in the Russian nuclear attacks of 1917.

Cricket (Gushiken Shumkichi)

Male, from a lower class rural family living to the north of Hakodate. Muscles are capable of vast explosive effort, enabling huge leaps and very powerful punches, but are not as good at lifting and extended exercise. Also reflexes are incredibly fast. Moved to Tokyo for work as an entertainer and an interesting life. Found that life as a street entertainer was not particularly lucrative, so turned to crime as a means of boosting income. Gained powers while escaping from the Police. He was eventually captured by Kamikase and given a choice of working for the Guard or a very long prison term. Reluctantly accepted. He was involved in the 1886 plot against the Emperor and only narrowly escaped death at the hands of Kamikase. In 1897 it was discovered that he was feeding the Russians intelligence information in return for money, and although he tried to escape was captured by the other members of the Guard and executed.

Dolphin (Otani Takuji)

Male rural lower class from near the town of Tottori, powers include changing into a dolphin, incredibly fast swimming (even without being in dolphin form), sonar and sonic attacks. Also stronger than normal. Originally a Shinto priest from a monastery on the coast, aged 36 when powers manifested while meditating in 1883. Although very much averse to combat and especially killing, he served the Guard well. He performed useful duty in WWI and WWII but died in the Russian nuclear attacks of 1917.

Grenade (Tanaka Masao)

Male rural lower class from the vicinity of Utsunomiya, born into the 'untouchable' Hinin class of society. Was a miner, caught in an underground explosion/mine collapse. Used powers to escape and was soon recruited into the Guard. Given a good life by the Guard which has made him totally loyal to the Japanese government; very strong and tough and capable of generating explosive balls of energy for a variety of effects, but which must all be thrown. His somewhat headstrong nature led him to be badly injured in WWI, but he still served valiantly in that war and WWII, dying in the nuclear attacks of 1917.

Dagger (Toshikawa Taniko)

Female urban lower class from the city of Nagoya, born in 1866. Father ran off with another woman when she was twelve. Mother became very ill and couldn't support them. Taniko was forced to become a prostitute on the Nagoya docks. She had been doing this for some years, learning English and Russian from clients, and various skills from her job, when in 1882 several drunken sailors tried to rape her and her powers came out. The police found out what had happened from the terrified sailors, and the Japanese government then recruited her into the Emperors Guard, despite her background and attitude. Over the years her strong will, intelligence, high-living lifestyle (once she got some money) and disdain for many of the restrictions placed on Japanese women caused her problems, but also indirectly led to many improvments in the lot of Japanese women in general. She died in the Russian nuclear attacks of 1917.
