Russian Overmen

Only three Overmen ever worked for the Russian government in the period to the end of WWI. There were many other Russian Overmen but in the main they either avoided displaying their powers and so were never discovered, or worked for the various nationalist and revolutionary groups whose actions brought about WWI and the first breakup-up of Russia. These three Overmen survived the occupation of their nation by the Germans, British, French and Japanese from 1900 to 1915, and were deeply involved in the Bolshevik revolution. However, after the retaking of Russia and the start of Stalins Purges, they too became distrusted by Stalin, and were assassinated by government agents. The three Overmen were codenamed Soundwave, Buran and White Heat. Click on the character names to return to the top of the page.

Zvukobaya Volna (Soundwave, Witold Janowski)

From a lower class rural background near Baranovichi in Belorussia. Born in 1863. Always sneaky and nosey, Witold grew up listening under peoples windows for interesting things which he could use to get people in trouble. In early 1882 he was eavesdropping on a rich local landowner when he was seen. As the landowner was being unfaithful to his wife at the time he set his men to catch and bring back the snooper. Witold ran for his life, but was unfortunately caught and dragged back semi-conscious. As the landowner raised a gun to shoot him, Witold suddenly manifested a number of sonic powers and was soon able to disable all the people present and escape. Fleeing from his parents house he used his powers to survive. Hearing about this Overman from various sources the government tracked him down and offered him a job. Witold willingly accepted, and was trained in espionage work. With Buran and White Heat he was responsible for kidnapping Pendragon in 1883. Over the following years he served the Russian government well, being especially adept at undercover and infiltration work. Despite his best efforts Russia fragmented in 1895, and alongside Buran and White Heat he fought the invading armies, escaping major injury. He was badly injured several times in the occupation period, but managed to survive. He fought undercover and behind enemy lines in WWII, and assisted greatly in the communist takeover of Russia. When Stalin began to mistrust the Overmen after the revolution Witold attempted to prove his worth in 1921 by betraying Buran and White Heat when they tried to escape (having lost none of his skill at listening under windows with the years). Although this helped him for a time, still Stalin came to mistrust him, and he was murdered in his sleep by an unknown assassin early in 1923.

In addition to being very fast, Witold had a number of sonic powers - he could disrupt a persons inner ear, making them lose coordination, generate a sonic force beam, a powerful sonic force field, and dampen all sound in a radius about himself. In later years he also developed a form of sonic mind control. He was also practically immune to other sonic powers used on him. In appearance Witold was short and unimpressive with little in the way of muscles, and appeared to be somewhat younger than he actually was. He had black hair and very dark, almost black eyes.

Buran (Snowstorm, Galina Ryumin)

From a lower-class background in the vicinity of the city of Ryazan in Russia, Galina was born in 1858. Her parents died when she was very young, leaving her to be brought up by her aged grandmother. As Galina grew up her grandmother got frailer and frailer, and several times she turned down offers of marriage in order to look after her. In late 1880 her grandmother came down with a slow wasting disease, and by the summer of 1881 it was obvious that she was soon going to die. Galina was holding her grandmothers hand, wishing that she wouldn't die, but knowing that she would, and despairing of what would happen to herself after that when she suddenly felt something happen within herself and flow into her grandmother. The next day when she awoke her grandmother was much improved, but she soon found that if she did not do whatever it was to her grandmother at least once a day she started to deteriorate again. A nosy neighbour, wondering at her grandmothers sudden improvement, spyed on Galina and saw her healing her grandmother. The news soon got around and Galina was deluged with people wanting her to heal them too. As this occured she noticed that she seemed to be becoming very strong and much tougher and fitter, as well as being able to ignore the cold. At first she didn't mind, being basically a fairly nice person, but later in 1881 she was forced to go and heal a nobleman in Ryazan. While she was away for several days her grandmother quickly deteriorated and died. Galina returned home and was heartbroken by what she found. She refused to heal anyone else as it was their fault her beloved grandmother had died. She packed up and decided to leave. The villagers weren't willing to let her go, and trapped her despite her strength until she suddenly manifested a new power, knocking several people out, and somehow killing the nosy neighbour without leaving a mark on her. She fled to Ryazan and hid, wondering what to do now. By this time news of her miraculous healing had reached the government, who asked for this person to come forward. Having nowhere else to go Galina did so, and was taken into government service where she was trained in espionage and spying skills. By 1883 she was one of three Russian government Overmen, and was involved in a plot to kidnap the British Overman scientist and inventor known as Pendragon. Following this she served the Russian government loyally until Russia disintegrated in 1895 despite her and the other government Overmen's best efforts. As they worked together she and Beloe Kalenie gradually fell in love, and in 1887 they were married. Galina bore two children in 1888 and 1891, but despite this she fought valiantly but futilely against the invading armies in WWI, and was a dedicated member of the Russian resistance during the occupation period from 1900 to 1915, several times almost dying or being captured. She was at the heart of the Bolshevik revolution and fought bravely in the liberation of Russia and for the formation of the USSR, being badly injured a number of times. After the success of the revolution Galina was a nationwide heroine, and immensely popular. Despite, or perhaps because of this, and her ties to the Tsars, Stalin came to mistrust all the Overmen, and in 1921 prepared to have them killed while 'resisting arrest' on trumped-up charges. Hearing about this Galina and White Heat decided to escape with their children. Despite all their best efforts they were betrayed by Zvukobaya Volna and Galina died in a massive ambush along with her husband. The fate of the couples children is unknown but a female Soviet superhuman calling herself Buran appeared in 1990, apparently with similar powers to the original Buran, and a superhuman known as Red Heat assisted in the anti-Gorbachev uprising in 1992 with similar powers to White Heat, which implies that at least one of their children managed to survive.

Galina was a tall, attractive, striking woman with very pale skin, almost white-blonde hair and very dark eyes.

Beloe Kalenie (White Heat, Valery Yablokov)

From a middle-class rural background near the city of Krasnodar in southern Russia. He gained his powers when, during a major thunderstorm, he was caught in a barn which was struck by lightening and caught fire. As the fire got worse he somehow found himself immune to the heat, and able to cut his way free by focussing heat through his hands. Although he survived he was reviled by his friends and family for being some kind of fire-demon and was forced to flee. After hearing reports of what had happened Russian government representatives managed to track Valery down and offered him a position working for them. With nowhere else to go he accepted and was brought to Moscow for training. In Moscow he met Galina Ryumin, the Overman known as Buran. As they worked together he and Buran gradually fell in love, and in 1887 they were married. Galina bore him two children in 1888 and 1891. Alongside his wife he fought valiantly but futilely against the invading armies in WWI, and was a dedicated member of the Russian resistance during the occupation period from 1900 to 1915, several times almost dying or being captured. With Buran he was at the heart of the Bolshevik revolution and fought bravely in the liberation of Russia and for the formation of the USSR, being badly injured a number of times. After the success of the revolution he was a nationwide hero, and immensely popular. Despite, or perhaps because of this, and his ties to the Tsars, Stalin came to mistrust all the Overmen, and in 1921 prepared to have them killed while 'resisting arrest' on trumped-up charges. Hearing about this he and Galina decided to escape with their children. Despite all their best efforts they were betrayed by Zvukobaya Volna and they died in a massive ambush.
