Bethany was the exceptionally bright and promising daughter of two mildly psionic potential trouble causers. In 1989, when Bethany was fourteen, the British government sent Michael Ravenwood (Warlock) to deal with the problem and acquire a potentially useful subject for the governmental psionic research establishment. Her parents caught wind of this, and tried to run but Michael caught up with them when they were hiding in the house of Dr Emily Ryan (Tyche). He killed both of Bethanys parents, blinded Emily and made off with Bethany herself; she has no memory of this.
At the research establishment Bethany was subjected to a tortuous regime of experimental drugs and testing. Eventually this regime triggered powerful but limited psionic abilities in Bethany, but her mind was shattered - she went into a drug trip and never came out. Initially she was completely cut off from the real world - unable to speak or care for herself in any way, and her control over her powers was tenuous at best. Michael Ravenwood saw what had happened to Bethany, and felt her powers; he suffered an acute crisis of conscience as his illusions about his work, such as that what he did to people was for their own good - things like training and rehabilitation to make them full members of society (most of which had actually been implanted by psionic brainwashing techniques) were shattered. He kidnapped Bethany from the research establishment and ran off. After some time he was able to track down and join the psionic resistance, despite initial worries about his loyalty on their part.
Michael now acts as Bethanys self-appointed guardian, friend and father-figure. He helps to keep her in touch with the real world. He helped the resistance train her powers and help her recover enough that she would be able to speak (although she still loses her powers of speech and becomes incoherent when under stress). Only the higher levels of the resistance know the full details of Michaels past and he doesnt speak about it at all. For this reason others in the resistance wonder why a man with his reputation seems to care for this brain-damaged girl so much. Apart from caring for Bethany, Michael is very much a loner. He clearly loves her in a fatherly sense - she is more important to him than the success of a mission. He often acts as an interpreter between Bethany and the real world.
If Bethany ever regained her memory she would almost certainly hate Michael Ravenwood for what he did, and might even try to kill him or destroy his mind.
Michael is almost completely emotionless, in part due to his training as a psionic assassin and kidnapper, in part due to his natural tendencies. Bethany has a very child-like mind and suffers from extreme (though short-lived) emotion swings. Although she doesnt remember what happened to her Bethany is frightened of the dark and being confined again. She is very sensitive to atmosphere and the emotions of others which can easily affect how she sees the world. Bethany is still somewhat dependant on drugs which substitute for those which destroyed her mind and triggered her powers.
Bethany is a very attractive strawberry blonde who usually wears a very out of focus expression. She likes to dress in bright colours and usually carries a teddy bear about with her.
