The mother of Margot and Esmee; not really known about until Margot's existence became known. The daughter of the king and queen of Aretskaya, a shadow abutting onto Arden. It is a medieval Russian-type shadow - cold and snowy, with birch and pine forests, Slavic people, wolves, sledges, onion-domed palaces, furs and chain mail. She has black hair, but other than that is the spitting image of Fiona. Usually wears long dresses of white, gold and silver, with fur trim. Normally found in Castle Arden, and does not come to Amber very often.
She was apparently 'given' to Julian in some kind of deal between him and her parents, the rulers of Aretskaya, in 15 PPF. Random was not pleased when he found out, but Julian basically ignored him.
Apparently she is a Mage.
Chief of the Amber City Watch. This makes him the effective chief of police in Amber.
An Amber Castle guard.
The mother of Caleb. The oldest daughter of Lord Salvador Kesht and his wife Elizabeth, heads of one of Ambers major trading houses. She is short, slight and beautiful, with very long, very blonde hair and very pale blue eyes. Reputedly very intelligent, but also very shy, timid and bookish. When reading (which is often) wears reading glasses. Dresses in conservatively-cut clothes (usually long dresses) of black, pink, blue and grey.
Lorraine was a woman who Corwin fell for while in shadow Lorraine. She was a camp follower at Ganelon's castle there when Corwin met her, and initially he saw her as nothing more than that, but over his 'date' with her his opinion changed, perhaps because he saw something of a kindred spirit in her.
"Her hair was rust-coloured with a few strands of grey in it. I guessed she was under thirty, though. Eyes, very blue. Slightly pointed chin. Clean, even teeth inside a mouth that smiled at me a lot. Her voice was somewhat nasal, her hair was too long, her make-up laid on too heavily over too much tiredness, her complexion too freckled, her choice in clothing too bright and tight. But I liked her. I did not think I'd actually feel that way when I asked her out that night because, as I said, liking her was not what I had in mind."
Corwin, in 'The Guns Of Avalon', Chapter Two
She was born in the woods of Lorraine, far to the west of Ganelon's castle, and although she didn't like the peasant life, had nowhere else to go. She lived with a man named Jarl, who beat her when he could borrow or steal enough to get drunk.
She had a touch of the second sight, making her sensitive to things, and subject to occasional prophetic dreams. Her mother supposedly had more of this gift, and her grandmother was, apparently, a sorceress, though Lorraine knew little of such things - just enough to do some relatively minor spells. These gave her what she wanted, but then always backfired on her in some way. She used a spell to get her man, who turned out to be a wife-beater. She used another to get a pretty daughter, and she was the child found dead in the centre of a tiny ring of toadstools which formed the basis of the Dark Circle, the manifestation of the Black Road in Lorraine. Jarl found their daughter, and died of convulsions several days later. She used a spell to protect Corwin (wishing to stay in Lorraine despite Corwin offering to carry her away), and it led to her death.
It would seem that she was a refugee from the Dark Circle who eventually found her way to Ganelon's castle, and who became a camp follower simply to survive.
One of her grandfathers was publicly drawn and quartered for leading one of the early uprising against Lord Corwin, an unpleasant shadow of the Real Corwin who once ruled in Lorraine, which did not bias her towards Corwin when his true identify became known, so that she ran off with an officer named Melkin, one of her former lovers.
Corwin followed her, but was just too late to save her from Melkin, who ran her through and stole all of her jewellery (rings, bracelets and jewelled combs), concealing her body beneath a wild rosebush without flowers before riding on. Corwin buried her there, then rode down and killed Melkin, before returning to restore her jewellery, close her grave, and leave.
