UNIQUE CHAOS POWERS


These are the Chaos Powers which have been encountered by the party in The Last Enemy game. So far there are two of these:

The 'Ghosts' (Family Cawdor)

PRE-REQUISITES : Psyche and Endurance of Amber Rank or higher

Members of the family Cawdor can learn the ability to become insubstantial. This is something which only true-blooded members of the family can learn to do. With roughly the same amount of effort as involved in using shapeshifting, they can shift into a translucent insubstantial form, which allows them to move through solid matter, and solid matter to move through them. This is an 'all or nothing' ability; while insubstantial the 'ghost' can only do damage to solid things equivalent to the resistance the solid mass causes to their moving through it.

In Chaos, all but the inhabitants is unreal enough to be 'ghosted' through with no problems; this is the case in most of shadow too. Elsewhere, the more real the matter being ghosted through is, the more resistance it gives to motion. In Amber, all matter is quite real indeed, and moving through it is like moving through a very thick liquid - it is slow, and takes a lot of effort. In this case, the need to hold ones breath inside solid matter can become a problem.

Also, because Amberites and Chaosites are real, they can affect a 'ghost' with their bare hands (or normal weapons, in Amber itself); though they generally won't do as much damage as they might to a solid target, damage will still be done. Likewise, weapons which have become part of an Amberites (or Chaosites) reality by having points paid on them are real enough to hit a 'ghost' even in shadow, where a normal weapon will not have any significant effect.


The Souleater Power (Family Kwandril)

PRE-REQUISITES : Ranked Psyche and Endurance

Members of this family have mastered the ability to somehow forcibly suck the spirit/mind/soul from a living being and drag it into an internal spirit world, where all such souls 'live'. This spirit world appears to have an environment which is whatever the person with the power wishes, and can be different for different spirits (though more than one spirit can inhabit a given environment). From the 'outside' each environment appears to be an island floating in a void.

Taking a spirit requires direct psychic contact (i.e. physical contact or magic, not via Trump) and a Psyche advantage over the target, or a target who is willing. The maximum number of spirits a given person can contain depends on the relative Psyches of those held, and the Psyche of the person with the power.

The Souleater can talk with the 'ingested' spirits, internally, at will. Ingested souls can still be Trumped by others. However, if the person with the power does not want the spirits inside them to be Trumped then it will be their Psyche which much be overcome to make contact, not that of the trapped spirit. If a trapped soul is Trumped, the person doing the Trumping may be able to lend the ingested spirit sufficient strength that they can break free (and die as their bodiless spirit dissipates, unless the soul can be channelled into another body) or, perhaps, take control of the host (for a while).

Bodies from which the spirits have been taken are essentially brain dead (though they still breathe and must be fed). The Souleater can, if they wish, re-unite a spirit with an 'empty' body, which does not have to be the one the spirit originally came from.
