Caitlin is two shadows away from Coraltown having failed to penetrate its defences. Upon leaving the Coraltown shadow she has discovered guards in the neighbouring shadow, along the shadow fracture leading back to Ghenesh. They are mostly of the four-armed, prehensile-tailed type, with a few of the bat-eared humanoids present too. She Trumps Jihx to discuss this.
Jihx is in Ahnel, forming a besieging force from that ten percent of his army he feels he can most easily afford to lose. He feels the Trump call coming on, identifies the caller, and accepts it.
Caitlin discusses the situation with Jihx, but they agree to continue with the plan - Jihx's army will just have to tackle the guards first.
Elsewhere, not far from Coraltown, Whippoorwill finds a shadow where there is a bright ring of debris in the sky, and the landscape is peppered with craters, in the centre of one which lies exactly the type of volcano he is looking for. Occasional meteors flash through the sky.
He Trumps Godofos.
Godofos is in Ahnel just putting the finishing touches on his Trump-gate weapon, which is mounted under his Trump jet when he feels a Trump call coming on. Identifying the caller as Whippoorwill he accepts the call.
Whippoorwill explains the situation to him. Godofos already has one Trump link to a volcanic shadow, but decides that a second one will not do any harm. He starts to draw a Trump of the selected lava flow. To ensure that the Trump will survive in the molten lava he is drawing on a Trump-shaped plate of diamond using a diamond stylus.
As he does this they discuss the plan to make a 'Trump bug'. That is, to make a Trump of a distinctive looking rock and then place the rock in Coraltown so that it will be taken with the town if the Chaos lord retrieves his servants.
Discussion over, Whippoorwill leaves Godofos to these tasks to search for 'minions' for the attack. He quite quickly finds his normal group of soldiers, and heads off in search of more. After a while he Trumps Caitlin.
Godofos uses the waiting time to create a second attack Trump gate. This one is a free-standing device which he can control remotely using another Trump.
Caitlin wants to know how the plan is going, so she Trumps Jihx.
In Ahnel, Jihx feels the call coming on, identifies the caller as Caitlin, and takes it.
She tells him why she has called, and Jihx then Trumps Godofos to co-ordinate the attack plan.
We approach the planned time for the attack. By now Whippoorwill has assembled a few thousand troops, Godofos has assembled his mobile Trump gate and Jihx has assembled his army, with trebuchet and siege engines at the ready. So we all Trump one another to discuss how to proceed.
It is decided that this is the ideal point to put the radical changes in Amber politics that we have discussed previously to Gerard.
Whippoorwill goes back to The Tunnel to fetch the draft constitution from Mr Snide. The rest of us return to Amber.
Arriving at his villa in the Tunnel Whippoorwill takes a carriage to the Senate House, slipping in through a side door to avoid the senators. Mr Snide is just sitting back from his steam-powered typewriter as Whippoorwill arrives, and the typewriter is powering down. Mt Snide greets Whippoorwill and offers him a stack of paper that is the new draft constitution.
Whippoorwill thanks him, stating that he expects it to be the first of many further drafts, pays Mr Snide with more gold and then leaves for Amber.
The rest of us individually Trump into the Arrival Courtyard, go through the normal security procedures and are admitted. We ask for Gerard's whereabouts and are told that he is in the Command Centre. We head that way.
Entering the Command Centre, we find Gerard conferring with some Navy captains and other officers over maps of Amber and the surrounding shadows spread over various tables. There are lots of lower-level military types bustling about too.
We greet each other.
Gerard tells us that there have been no more incursions, which he finds worrying in itself.
Jihx tells him of the Coraltown attack plan. This takes a little while.
Whippoorwill arrives during this description and asks for Lady Vialle.
A servant tells him that she is busy organising the rationing plan for Amber.
Whippoorwill requests that she attends to discuss something of 'great import'. The servant goes off to inform her of this.
When Jihx is done, Gerard nods, and tells us that he approves of the plan. He wishes us luck. As he does so Lady Vialle arrives.
"And this is where Whippoorwill's discussion comes in," Caitlin chips in, helpfully.
Whippoorwill suggests that we retire to somewhere more private.
Gerard is somewhat put out at this, but agrees and indicates a conference room next door. We all adjourn to this room, which has a large window looking out over the city to the sea and contains a circular conference table and a drinks cabinet.
"Well sire, it's like this," Whippoorwill begins. "It seems to us that the state of Amber is in a state of change. There are more Amberites than there have ever been before. Although the elder Amberites are not here at the moment the prediction is that they will return. We need measures that will take account of these new circumstances."
"It seems to us that since the departure of King Oberon, Amber has suffered a series of damaging coup d'état. It may be possible to avoid these incidents by putting in place a facade that gives those who desire that power some share in it without having to take it by force."
"It would put our minds at rest if we were to install a written constitution that outlines how Amberites would decide these issues in the future. I have taken the liberty of drawing up a draft constitution. I can foresee the part that you will not like very much, that of a limited regency. I humbly propose this constitution to you for consideration."
He holds out the constitution towards Gerard.
Gerard, who has been visibly steaming more and more as this has gone on, finally explodes.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF THE UNICORN DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?!?!?!" he roars, slamming his fist onto the conference table and splitting it in two. "AMBER IS UNDER ATTACK!! ARE YOU MAD?!?! AND THIS COCK AND BULL IDEA IS MADNESS!! WE DON'T NEED ELECTIONS!! WE NEED STRONG LEADERSHIP, NOT THIS DEMOCRATIC CLAPTRAP!!" and he tears Whippoorwill's constitution up into tiny pieces.
There is much heated discussion.
Gerard is by no means convinced by any of it, and throws us out in a rage, telling us to get on with the defence of Amber and abandon this idea of constitutional reform.
However, as we leave, we notice Vialle mouth "Let me talk to him," to us, where Gerard cannot see. So perhaps there is hope yet.
The Command Centre staff are looking in some concern at the door as we all leave. We tell them to go about their business and leave the Command Centre.
Outside, we all decide that a trip to Vitesse is called for, and so we Trump there.
Renee, the innkeeper, greets us as we materialise in the courtyard of the auberge. A banquet in the private room is ordered, and we ensconce ourselves there.
Gerard's reaction to our proposal is discussed.
The consensus is that we continue to push the idea, whilst performing our duties, but make it clear that we want it implemented in the end. That is, Gerard should accept it now and be part of it or resist and in the end have it forced upon him anyway but without the chance to affect it himself.
Caitlin points out that it might all be moot when the Elders return anyway. If they disagree with our constitution is there really anything we can do to stop them overturning it? Fair point...
Godofos brings up the subject of the heads of the Elders which the Chaos delegation presented us with.
Whippoorwill tells us of their disposal in the swamp near to Vitesse.
In the end we decide that the heads are largely irrelevant; even with their Amberite blood they could be forgeries. Certainly we imagine that Arun could create such things if he wished, so the Chaosites can probably do the same.
We all eat and drink, then rest overnight in Vitesse in preparation for the battle tomorrow.
After breakfast the next morning Whippoorwill and Caitlin Trump to the shadow next to Coraltown while Godofos and Jihx Trump to Ahnel to prepare their forces.
Caitlin and Whippoorwill are able to avoid being seen by the guards as they Trump in, and hide in cover.
With everything ready in Ahnel, Godofos Trumps through to join Whippoorwill and Caitlin.
They discuss things, and it is decided to remove the two dozen or so guards. We move to be between them and the shadow fracture into the Coraltown shadow, and then attack from three sides. There are swiftly twenty-four dead guards (Caitlin having killed most of them).
With the coast clear, Godofos then opens a Trump gate into Ahnel.
Jihx sees the gate appear and leads the expendable part of his army through into the shadow next to Coraltown, Godofos adjusting the shape of the gate to short and wide to allow as many troops through at once as possible.
Having arrived, Jihx then leads the army through to the Coraltown shadow itself, bringing them in back in amongst the dead trees. He then starts to string them out all around the town through the dead trees above the shallow mile-wide bowl in which Coraltown sits.
In the arrival shadow, Godofos brings through another Trump jet, a two-seater one this time, and Caitlin is placed in its cockpit for maximum mobility with her magic-suppression powers. She then awaits the start of the battle.
In the Coraltown shadow, Whippoorwill gets into his war machine and begins to move underground towards Coraltown, using the tunnels he dug before. He opens a Trump link to Jihx and when Jihx accepts the call tells him that he will try to keep it open throughout the battle. He then begins to perform an anti-magical ritual that should be ready by the time the war machine reaches Coraltown. Unfortunately he quickly realises that he cannot do this and maintain the Trump link at the same time, so he drops the Trump link.
Suddenly Jihx hears the sounds of an attack within the woods off to one side.
He goes to investigate, his horse speeding along with blue sparks flashing from its hooves.
This commotion acts as a signal for the attack to start.
Caitlin concentrates on the Pattern and begins to radiate its anti-magical power about herself as her Trump jet swoops in towards Coraltown. This quickly nullifies the spells that she has sensed are in place about the town.
Godofos also takes this opportunity to take to the air and swoop over Coraltown. He drops his new mobile Trump gate about fifteen metres outside the walls of t Coraltown, pointing at it. It lands upright and pointing in the right direction. As he swoops over the town he opens the cockpit canopy and throws the 'distinctive stone' of which he has a Trump into the town.
He then activates the Trump gate outside the walls as he swoops away.
In the dead forest, Jihx arrives at the scene of battle to find his troops being attacked by the dead trees that seem to have suddenly animated!
Jihx draws his sword and blasts a tree with its new anti-magical power, a transparent blue beam almost like a jet of glowing blue water. The tree stops moving and falls over.
Pleased with this, Jihx starts blazing away at trees but also passes on the order to advance on Coraltown. He quickly realises that there are too many trees for him to dispose of them all in sensible time, so Jihx joins the advancing troops and takes the lead once more.
Charging down the bowl he takes aim and blasts the tower of Coraltown with anti-magic.
Whippoorwill has raced through his previous tunnels and is tunnelling upwards towards the centre of Coraltown, hoping to emerge under the Keep. He feels more and more resistance to his tunnelling efforts as he gets higher and begins to meet the fabric of Coraltown itself.
His anti-magical ritual complete, he prepares to unleash a magic suppression spell on the ground above him. This is something like a 'magical EMP' that will suppress all magic within its area of effect for a while.
Godofos activates the Trump gate outside the walls of Coraltown and turns it to 'hot'. The gate glows purple and a high pressure jet of lava shoots out of the gate and hits the outer wall of the town. Lava continues to pour out, burning the wall and beginning to flow out sideways around the wall too.
Godofos manoeuvres to hover over the part of wall directly affected by the lava flow and activates the Trump gate built into his Trump jet. This one he selects to 'cold'...
In her Trump jet, Caitlin is sensing and suppressing magic in the area. In particular she is swooping over the walls to suppress some magical weapons used by the troops there, which are firing random bolts up at the attacking aircraft.
Suddenly a gout of high pressure, extremely cold liquid streams from Godofos' Trump Jet. It hits the molten lava and there is an impressive explosion. As the steam and smoke dissipate a large breach is visible in the outer wall of Coraltown, through which lava is pouring.
Godofos moves on to the next wall, but sees that guards are stating to level long rifle-like weapons at him.
Energy of various types shoots up from the long rifles and hits the two Trump Jets. This is doing some damage but having no immediate effect.
One of the balls of lightening seen before rises from the Keep and heads outwards towards Jihx's army. Jihx fires his sword at it and it explodes into a pretty firework-type display.
Godofos pours cold over the second wall, then selects poison gas from his Trump Jet gate and this pours out over the same wall. Unfortunately this seems not to actually be poisonous in this shadow but mist of gas seems to be causing some problems to the troops below anyway.
Jihx and Caitlin sense a new spell passing over the charging army, but Caitlin is too far away to affect it with the Pattern.
Suddenly the bodies of the army from Jihx's previous assault on Coraltown rise up from the ground and start to attack the army Jihx is using now. Although there are many of them, they rather slow and uncoordinated zombies. Jihx tries to dispel the effect, but finds that he can only do it one zombie at a time. He reverts to using his sword's energy blast to pick off the zombies, fanning the beam when he can get destroy them in groups.
Whippoorwill completes his anti-magic spell and suddenly his machine is moving through the fabric of Coraltown much more easily, and it is not regenerating the damage.
Quite quickly the machine tunnels up through metres of 'coral' and bursts out of the ground. As it does so Whippoorwill Trumps Jihx.
Godofos switches his Trump Jet gate to 'hot' over the part of the of wall he been chilling. Another explosion breaches the second defensive wall.
He then changes tack and flies around the walls, pouring lava onto the defenders. This is quite effective!
Caitlin, concentrating on 'destroying magic' is knocking out Coraltown's defensive spells as quickly as they are being re-cast.
Looking around, Whippoorwill seems to be in a large circular coral chamber, more than two stories tall, with doors around it at the first floor level with ramps and stairs leading down to the floor. Large pillars of coral support the ceiling. He thinks that he is inside the keep.
There are a number of (mainly four-armed) soldiers in the chamber, who are starting to react to the emergence of the war machine, so he orders Xavion, his driver, to attack. Xavion begins to do this, running over many Chaos troops while Rupholt, the machine's weapons operator, attacks them with the machine's weapons arms.
Outside, Jihx feels a Trump call. He identifies the caller as Whippoorwill, and takes the call.
Whippoorwill explains the situation to him.
Jihx nods, then orders the nearest squad of troops to dismount. He begins to pass them through to Whippoorwill in the keep.
Caitlin sees several balls of energy fly up from the Keep towards Jihx's army and the two Trump jets. Those that approach her are dispelled by the Pattern, but Godofos is forced to dodge, spraying lava about wildly as he does so.
He then turns his Trump Jet towards the keep, which is glowing, about to produce another ball of energy. Godofos directs the lava jet at the keep, leaving it a few seconds and then switching back to cold liquid again.
There is another explosion and the peak of the tower is blasted into fragments. This seems to include the magical device producing the balls of energy.
Godofos continues this process, destroying the Keep from the top down.
Caitlin has her pilot fly back over Coraltown, where she focuses her anti-magic Pattern emanation on the keep once more. The pilot keeps himself amused by using the jet's weapons to strafe every Chaos soldier he can see.
Godofos suddenly feels something happening to him, something wash over him, and then he is bleeding from every orifice and out through the skin. Bad!
He quickly pulls out his own Trump and concentrates on it in the hope of using Trump Defence to dispel this effect.
Jihx's forces pour out of the back of Whippoorwill's vehicle and attack the Chaos soldier. Whippoorwill and Jihx are assisting in the battle whilst performing this Trump action.
Outside, Godofos radios Caitlin for assistance with his bleeding, which is clearly some form of spell. Caitlin has her pilot fly closer to Godofos, but by the time she gets there Godofos' own Trump Defence appears to have countered the spell, and he is not bleeding anymore. He is, however, covered in blood.
In the keep, more and more defenders are pouring into the chamber through the upper-storey doorways. At a rate higher than Jihx is passing attackers in through the link.
Whippoorwill suggests the Jihx joins him in the keep in person.
Jihx dives through the link.
As Jihx looks up, two mantichores charge in and down towards the invading forces.
Jihx blasts at one with his sword, hitting it. It roars and staggers back, but does not fall over.
It then swings its tail and a shower of iron spikes flies towards Jihx, who dives behind the war machine.
As the mantichores continue their attack some ghostly figures rise out of the floor and drift into Whippoorwill's war machine.
Another spell envelops Godofos, and he finds himself disappearing from the cockpit of his Trump Jet to reappears directly beneath it, not far from the jet of high-pressure lava.
The jet wobbles out of control and the stream of lava flashes towards Godofos. He goes to pull his emergency escape Trump of the Hospital off the top of his deck...
Caitlin sees what is happening and manipulates probability shadow to help Godofos be missed by the lava. Bolts of energy from the 'rifles' of the defending troops hit the Trump Jet, knocking it off course, and the jet of lava sweeps close by Godofos, only burning off the little finger of his left hand.
Godofos continues to concentrate on his emergency Trump.
Godofos's Trump Jet tumbles through the air and crashes into the keep and through its outer wall. It is still gouting lava, and begins to fill the keep.
Some way below all this, the ghosts are moving through the invading troops in the chamber, making them fall to the ground, curled up into balls and covered with frost.
Whippoorwill orders one of the approaching ghosts to stop. The ghost, who appears to be a thin, unhappy-looking woman, does not. She floats through him, causing a sudden feeling of intense cold, but not drastically affecting him. In spite of this Whippoorwill decides to Trump back to the next-door shadow.
Outside the war machine the two mantichores are leaping towards Jihx.
They fire poisoned iron spikes from their scorpion tails at Jihx again, and he just manages to dodge.
Jihx blasts one, timing the blast to try and knock one of them into a lava flow. It is knocked to the ground but does not end up in lava. As the other one lunges at Jihx he stabs it in the mouth with his sword and then fires an energy blast into it. The mantichore falls over, apparently not so tough internally as it is externally.
Jihx pulls out his sword but then notices a ghost approaching and retreats.
Godofos arrives in The Hospital shadow, falling out of the Trump link a few feet from a waiting gurney. Medical staff rush forward to assist.
He pushes them away, and Trumps to Ahnel.
Once in Ahnel leaps aboard another Trump jet and Trump-Gates himself to the shadow next to Coraltown.
In the Keep, Whippoorwill begins to evacuate the crew of his war machine through the Trump link to the next-door shadow.
Jihx turns and blasts at the ghost with his anti-magical blast.
It disappears with a pop.
Jihx tries the same trick on the other mantichore, but it does not appear to work.
Jihx charges the mantichore instead, rolling to avoid a cluster of iron spikes it fires at him, but some poison splashes on his skin even so. When they clash Jihx's sword slices through its side and he blasts it again.
Jihx leaps onto its back and rams his sword into the base of its tail, dodging the poison sting, before triggering the energy blast and blowing its tail off. He then climbs up its back, sticks the sword into its head and blows its head off. The mantichore dies.
He then stands on the corpse and starts blasting away at the chaos forces remaining in the room with wide-angle sword blasts.
It is at this point that Whippoorwill points out that the room is filling with lava as the flow from Godofos' downed Trump jet makes its way down through the Keep.
They begin to evacuate their own forces from the keep through Trump links to the next-door shadow.
Outside, Caitlin, seeing the army outside the town being harassed by trees and zombies, flies over and dispels the magic on them in long swathes. As she does so the trees so affected stop moving and the zombies fall to the ground.
Godofos flies through the next-door shadow (seeing the drew of Whippoorwill's machine on the ground below him) then back to Coraltown, where he strafes the walls and rooftops of the town with laser and gunfire.
At this point Caitlin senses a presence appearing in the shadow, spreading out from a point. However, although the overall form the presence is the same as before, it appears to be yet another person, making, so far, three different people doing this.
Looking off towards the source of the presence, she sees a particular Coraltown gatehouse, far from the major areas of combat.
In the Keep, Jihx also senses the presence and tells Whippoorwill, who Trumps Godofos.
When Godofos takes the call, Whippoorwill asks to be brought through, so Godofos lands (the jet only having a single-person cockpit) and they Trump through to him before he takes off again.
The pilot of Caitlin's jet is firing continuously into the gatehouse, using lasers and guns. The gatehouse is now looking seriously damaged.
However, Caitlin is suddenly not so sure that the source of the presence is actually inside it, the feeling now being all around her with no real variation in strength as she approaches the gatehouse itself.
She begins to concentrate on the Pattern.
Jihx and Whippoorwill summon their respective mounts using the Pattern.
Jihx leaps onto his large white hawk and Whippoorwill onto his horse. They charge off in the direction of the gatehouse.
Jihx concentrates on the Pattern and focuses this as best he can in the direction of the presence.
Although he no longer has the mounted Trump Gate device (that being on another aircraft), Godofos can still create a Trump gate, though the further from him it is the harder it is. So he creates a Trump gate to a pit of lava, with the gate appearing a little way off outside of his Trump jet.
When the gate opens, he direct the jet of lava at the gatehouse.
Caitlin senses that someone inside the gatehouse is trying to cast magic, but that this is failing because of her radiating of Pattern energy around herself.
In his jet, Godofos switches to cold again.
Suddenly the gatehouse begins to shrink away in all directions, racing off from the point of view of both Caitlin and Godofos, who are practically on opposite sides of it.
There is another explosion that further damages the gatehouse and Godofos' cold blast hits it. This causes much damage but the gatehouse continues to shrink away.
From outside the walls of Coraltown Jihx sees what is going on and blasts the gatehouse with anti-magic. This seems to have no effect.
However, we notice that the gatehouse is shrinking away at a rate that we can, with the aid of the Trump Jets and Jihx's hawk, keep up with.
So Godofos, Caitlin and Jihx follow it, although Jihx does get more and more left behind as the pursuit continues.
Godofos and Caitlin continue to attack the fleeing building with gunfire, lasers and molten lava, damaging it more and more.
Suddenly the gatehouse tower stops moving and shadow snaps back into place. The gatehouse is now on top of a tor-like spike of rock in an open desolate, lifeless moon-lit moor, though Caitlin can tell that this is still in the same shadow. The presence is still all around the group.
Godofos takes advantage of the tower's stopping to continue his lava attack, causing significant additional damage.
Back at Coraltown, Whippoorwill sees a tor-like pillar of rock appear where the gatehouse used to be. He decides to Trump Jihx.
On the back of his large white hawk, Jihx arrives at the new location of the gatehouse just as Whippoorwill Trumps him. He identifies the caller, and accepts it.
Caitlin has her pilot take a look around the area in case we should expect more trouble, but no signs of civilisation here.
As she returns to the gatehouse, there is another 'snapping' sensation in shadow from inside the gatehouse and the presence disappears. Damn.
Jihx explains the situation to Whippoorwill, and informs Godofos of the same information. Jihx then goes through the Trump link to Whippoorwill and back to Coraltown. Godofos Trumps his jet back to the shadow next to Coraltown and returns to Coraltown that way.
Caitlin remains on the moor and has her pilot hover over the gatehouse so she can be lowered down to check inside it.
At Coraltown, Godofos retrieves some Trump hardware - tanks and self-propelled artillery - from Ahnel. They begin to thoroughly demolish Coraltown.
With this in hand, he uses his other Trumps to turn off the lava-pouring Trump gate outside the walls and retrieve it out of the lava.
Whippoorwill and Jihx lead the troops in another attack on the Chaos defenders.
Caitlin abseils down to the gatehouse from the Trump jet and goes in through a hole in the roof. Inside are a lot of ruined room. Moving further down inside Caitlin finds the remains of a large and luxurious living area, roughly one half of which has been filled will rubble fallen from the upper levels. A black snake-like tail is visible poking out from under some of the rubble, twitching slightly. Nearby a black leathery hand with claw-tipped fingers is also visible, also twitching a little
Caitlin Trumps Jihx and when he takes the call informs him of this. He comes through the Trump link and joins her.
Jihx's first instinct is to kill the Chaosites where they lie, but in something of a role reversal, Caitlin discourages this and instead asks him to cover her.
She goes over to the hand and begins to clear the rubble away, revealing first an arm, then the rest of a leathery-skinned black demon with horned head, goat-like legs with cloven hooves and a barb-tipped tail. This demon appears to be the same one that Godofos and Whippoorwill encountered during the slaughter of the survivors from our original attack on Coraltown. The demon is still alive and healing itself, but is unconscious. Caitlin ensures that it remains so. In the process of this she notices that it has a Trump deck.
Jihx Trumps Godofos while Caitlin begins to un-bury the snake-tailed creature. The faintly iridescent black scales of the tail each have a razor-sharp barb on them, like a rose thorn, so Caitlin finds a pair of armoured gauntlets and uses them to protect herself while she works.
When Godofos takes the Trump call, Jihx explains the situation to him.
As Caitlin works she uncovers the tail to the point where it, along with three other similar tails, joins a thick snake-like body, still covered in bards. As she uncovers further, she reveals a snake-like body with, at the other end, four long necks each with a snake-like head on the end. Each head has sharp horns (in addition to the barbed scales) and wicked-looking fangs. Just behind the point where the body splits into the four necks there is an armoured harness with, along with some non-magical weapons, a large Trump deck (larger than that of the other demon) secured to it.
Godofos and Whippoorwill come through the Trump link and join Jihx and Caitlin.
Between us all we ensure that the two demons are bound and not about to regain consciousness. As this is done, Jihx notices that the black-skinned leathery demon has many magical items about its person, weapons and other things, including a set of nearly invisible skin-tight armour. These are all removed. He and Godofos also notice their now-removed Trump decks.
Given our past experience with Trump-based attacks we wonder what damage will be able to do now...
That done, we Trump with them to Amber, where any of their magic will hopefully be suppressed.
