BOOST

A New Power for Champions

Home   Up   Site Map

Boost is a new power which is basically the reverse of the Suppress power, that is, a power which adds to the active points of a power possessed by the target while it is in use. It has arisen from the London Champions game where it is one of the powers of Chronos, Master of Time. In his case its special effect is that of concentrating the power of any attack into a much shorter time, thus increasing its effect.

The Power:

The base cost of Boost is 5 points per d6.

Boost is a ranged power, with a maximum range of (5 x active points) in Inches. It adds the total rolled on the dice of Boost to the Active Points of the power being Boosted, and this Boost remains as long as the person with the power continues to pay endurance for it (that is, it is a Continuous power). As soon as the person with the power stops paying Endurance for it, all effects of the Boost stop.

If the target wants to resist its effects (for some strange reason!), Power Defence subtracts from the total rolled on the dice.

The basic power can affect one specified type of power. To affect any one of a close group of powers is a +1/4 Advantage. To affect any one of a broad group of powers (e.g. any attack, any defence, any movement power) is a +1 Advantage. To affect all powers of a given special effect at once (e.g. all fire powers, all mechanical powers) is a +2 Advantage.

Summary:

Notes:

When this power was first conceived, it cost ten points per dice. However, later consideration, and comparison with other powers, led me to reduce the cost to five points per dice. This arose from comparison with the power whose effect is nearest to that of Boost, namely Aid.

Although not ranged, Aid only costs five points per d6, and its effect lasts for a while after it is used. Making the Aid power Ranged still left it cheaper, per dice, than Boost was, and still with the advantage of its effects continuing for a while after the power was used.

For these reasons, I concluded that Boost should cost five points per dice, too. This makes it comparable to Aid, but with the advantage of being ranged, and the disadvantage of it not lasting once the power stops being used.
