Rathar Mage-Cleaver

By Andrew Davies, used with permission.

Rathar was found unconscious and covered in frost by a police patrol in Central Park, New York, dressed in plate armour and carrying several weapons. Upon awakening it became apparent to the police officers that he had something wrong with him. He seemed to think that he was a 337 year old warrior from some unknown clan of Dwarves, living in the land of Kaz-Barkaz in some kind of magical medieval world called Dalkinor. However, he could speak English with an accent. He said that he had been banished here by a major ice demon after his village was attacked by it and a band of Orcs. He and the rest of his clan had been captured and the demon had banished each one separately.

The police officers took the 'dwarf' back to the station and a police psychologist attempted to find out what was wrong with him. The dwarf appeared able to answer all questions about his background, and his 'delusion' appeared total in nature. The psychologist decided to have Rather remanded to a local mental hospital for further investigation. On the way to the hospital, Rathar escaped from the van carrying him and vanished into the city.

He wandered around for some time, learning about his new surroundings, and after finding a house which had no-one living in it, he moved in. Over the next week he explored this strange new place, finding it full of criminals and the poor. As he had no apparent means of 'going home' he thought it would be good to clean up his area. The local criminals soon learnt to stay away from the new arrival after several lesser thieves, drug dealers and pimps were caught and left tied up near police stations for the police to find.

Last week Rathar was passing an alleyway when he saw a man in strange armour battling six men with weapons. It looked as though the man in armour had been ambushed, so Rathar ran in to help this strange new person. Quickly the battle was finished, with the foes vanquished.

The armoured figure thanked Rathar for his help, telling him that the attackers were members of an evil group known as Terror Incorporated. He introduced himself as the Cyber-Samurai. Rathar told him about himself, and the Samurai seemed to accept him, and arranged for somewhere for Rathar to stay.

Some time later he and Rathar joined a group of New York-based superheros...

Rathar looks like a (rather short) typical fantasy-world dwarf. He is a metre tall and weighs 75 kg. He is ugly, with black eyes and a large bulbous nose, black hair and a long black beard, plaited with beads. He (apparently) received his 'Mage-Cleaver' nickname for his hatred of magic-users in general, and mentallist-mages in particular, and his treatment of them upon discovery...

He normally wears plate armour (originally steel, soon replaced with more effective titanium, then high-tech ceramic armour composite), and carries a hand axe and heavy crossbow.

Rathar in Champions Terms.

Over the course of the game Rathar did manage to return to Dalkinor where, among other things, he gained a follower in the Dwarf Gentharis Steelaxe.
