TELLUS : TIMELINE

PART 2

Timeline Part 1.

1914 AUC [1161 AD]

Roman engineers produce the first functioning energy weapon, which works by stimulated emission of radiation. It becomes known as the Alses (from the acronym of its name [Laser]) and is used as a fixed anti-missile defence.

1931 AUC [1178 AD]

The first vehicle-mounted Alses weapon is produced in India.

1949 AUC [1196 AD]

The first man-portable Alses weapon is produced in Rome.

1962 AUC [1209 AD]

All three major powers found their first Lunar colonies.

Large-scale exploration of the solar system is carried out, much of it spearheaded by Indian explorers.

2000 AUC [1247 AD]

Bimillenial celebrations of the founding of Rome are held across the Empire. A huge exhibition of Rome's achievements is held in Rome on the site of the AD1000 exhibition.

2046 AUC [1293 AD]

The first self-sustaining 'hot' fusion reaction is produced in an experimental reactor in India. Fusion power quickly displaces other means of power generation across Tellus.

Fusion technology soon finds application in continuous-boost interplanetary fusion rockets.

2058 AUC [1305 AD]

The first asteroid mining facilities are constructed.

Cybernetic technology advances enough to allow the construction of bionic limb replacements. Although these are initially rather crude, they soon advance enough to be almost as good as the real thing.

Advances in fusion technology allow the production of fusion-jet aircraft, which require no fuel but which provide thrust simply by heating air to very high temperatures. This technology is also adapted to the launching of ground-to-orbit spacecraft.

2065 AUC [1312 AD]

Developments in computer and materials technology allow the development of self-repairing machinery with an potential lifespan of centuries. This technology also allows the creation of cybernetic implants which are actually better than than the parts they replace. This gradually leads to the creation of several groups of 'super-soldiers' by the Roman, Chinese and Indian governments.

2111 AUC [1358 AD]

The first truly intelligent and creative artificial intelligence is created at a laboratory in India. AI's soon spread across Tellus, where their capabilities are put to use in many fields, especially that of defence.

The first extra-terrestrial penal colonies are set up on the planet Mercury by the Romans.

2125 AUC [1372 AD]

Indian sceintists, expanding on their previous work, produce Tellus' first functioning 'cold' fusion reactor.

2157 AUC [1404 AD]

AI technology develops enough to allow the production of self-aware, self repairing war machines. Associated developments also allow the production of suits of armour which greatly enhance the physical abilities of the person wearing them. Although initially developed for military use, these suits soon find applications in many areas, especially industry both on and off Tellus.

2203 AUC [1450 AD]

The actions of a series of new leaders in all three of Rome, India and China slowly begin to raise the level of international tension.

2214 AUC [1461 AD]

The techniques of medical limb and organ regeneration and regrowth are developed by a Chinese medical research team. At the same time they also develop techniques allowing the growth of clone bodies and the transferral, via AI, of minds into them.

2221 AUC [1468 AD]

A new Indian leader, Jahangir Vallabha, sides with Rome against China. As the international situation seems to go more and more against China, the Chinese Emperor Kwan Wu and his government considers a pre-emptive first strike against Rome and India.

2228 AUC [1475 AD]

After Rome makes a series of unreasonable demands of China, Kwan Wu orders a first strike against both Roman and Indian holdings across the Solar System. However, the Roman and Indian defences are not taken by surprise, and retaliate. Billions die in the three-day war which follows, and civilisation falls suddenly and violently. All off-Tellus colonies are destroyed in the violence, which consists mainly of fusion bomb and laser strikes, although chemical and biological weapons are also used.

This war becomes known as the Nex (violent death).

Very little is recorded of the next five hundred years as people struggle to survive against a destroyed climate, a ravaged landscape, bands of marauders and, most significantly, self-repairing war robots which cannot be told the war has ended.

These warbots hold the rebuilding of civilisation back for hundreds of years because, although the polulation and the land slowly recovered from the Nex, no reconstruction above a certain level lasts for long before it is destroyed by warbots. Killer robots of all types (some of which appear to be human) stalk the land.

Despite this something calling itself the Roman Empire survives the devastation and in several places such as the Library of Alexandria, scholars manage to preserve some of the old knowledge.

2737 AUC [1984 AD]

The last known warbot finally runs down, and human civilisation is free to start rebuilding itself without fear of instant destruction. However, fear of robots, cyborgs and AI's has become deeply ingrained in the psyche of every human being.

2768 AUC [2015 AD]

The world slowly begins to reindustrialise. It is lead in this by nations with access to old centres of learning, such as the new Arabian Republic which contains the old Library of Alexandria within its territory. However, in many cases the fact that most raw materials and fossil fuels were mined long before the Nex hinders redevelopment, forcing the mining of old ruins for raw materials, the distillation of alcohol for fuel, and the use of alternative materials, such as ceramics instead of metal.

2778 AUC [2025 AD]

The first post-Nex steam engine is built in what becomes the Arabian Republic.

2795 AUC [2042 AD]

Ships from what becomes known as the Great Spirit alliance make contact with Rome when they land in Gaul. The government representatives aboard refuse all suggestions of re-joining with Rome.

2803 AUC [2050 AD]

Chinese ships land in western Atlantis. Like their Roman counterparts the Atlantean natives reject all question of re-joining their old masters.

As it regains its military might the New Roman Empire slowly begins to expand out from its Italian stronghold to retake what was once Rome's. However, in the intervening time many new communities have grown up free from Roman control and with no desire to return to it. In several cases negotiation and blackmail are enough to bring nations back into the Roman fold, but mostly force has to be used.

At about the same time China also begins to reform, using much the same techniques.

2809 AUC [2056 AD]

Roman engineers build the first post-Nex internal combustion engine, which uses alcohol for fuel.

2812 AUC [2059 AD]

Scientists in the Kingdom of Anglia redevelop the radio.

As it grows the Arabian Republic builds a solid reputation for tolerance and understanding of cultural differences.

2817 AUC [2064 AD]

The Great Spirit Alliance shocks Rome when an Alliance seaplane crosses the Atlantic and lands offshore near Rome.

2833 AUC [2080 AD]

The first post-Nex armoured fighting vehicles are exhibited at a military display in Rome.

2854 AUC [2101 AD]

The first post-Nex jet aircraft are used by the Ashanti to repulse on Roman attack in west Africa.

2861 AUC [2108 AD]

Several nations regain the capability to manufacture nuclear weapons almost simultaneously.

2869 AUC [2116 AD]

The northward and westward expansion of the Roman Empire is halted only when the last three independent nations in northern Europe, Nue Germania, The Kingdom of Anglia and Fennoscandia join in what becomes known as the Triple Alliance to defeat the Roman Legions at the battle of the Rhine. Despite occasional internal problems the Triple Alliance persists to this day.

2875 AUC [2122 AD]

The first post-Nex space launch is carried out from Nue Germania, of a spy satellite. As time goes by many nations launch their own satellites for both reconnaissance and communications, but because of the rebuilding effort on the ground no real effort to put a man into space is made.

With its forces unable to re-integrate the rest of Europe and its progress east blocked by the Mongolian Rus and the Arabian Republic, New Rome turns its eyes southwards, and slowly begins to expand across the Sahara desert.

Similarly the re-expansion of China is blocked in the south and west by the new Indian state, and various new nations such as Khmer, Nippon, the Kingdom of Erlanga and Fanmaode Daoya (the Luxuriant Islands).

2884 AUC [2131 AD]

The Congress of Nations, an organisation aimed at resolving international disputes and other problems by negotiation rather than force is set up in Alexandria, the capital of the Arabian Republic.

2897 AUC [2144 AD]

The seat of the Christian Church moves from Rome to Jerusalem in the Arabian Republic, joining Islam and Mithraism, which have always been based in what became the Republic.

Ashanti rises as a power to be reckoned with in West Africa when it forces Roman expansion into west Africa to halt north of the River Niger.

2903 AUC [2150 AD]

Genetic fingerprinting techniques are developed which many of the more advanced and dictatorial nations (such as Nue Germania) use to weed genetic abnormalities from the population.

2948 AUC [2195 AD]

The first post-Nex manned space launch is carried out from Nippon.

Colonies are re-established in Tellurian orbit and on Luna, many of them occupying the abandoned shells of earlier settlements. Some of the first orbiting facilities to be built are solar power satellites which beam electricity to a power-hungry Tellus.

2960 AUC [2207 AD]

A combined Khmer-Nippon engineering team finally re-develop hot fusion power, a step which hugely increases Tellus' available energy supplies.

Social reform in Rome allow the introduction of a limited form of democracy. However, the Emperor still holds the reins of power.

3000 AUC [2247 AD]

Trimillenial celebrations of the founding of Rome are held across the New Empire in a celebration of the New Empires determination to carry on the traditions of old Rome.

3004 AUC [2251 AD]

A combined Arabian-Ashanti research team finally rediscovers the secret of cold fusion power.

As time goes by fusion plants of down to man-portable size are developed.

3017 AUC [2264 AD]

The techniques of medical limb and organ regrowth are finally redeveloped by several medical teams working independently in various parts of the world.

3029 AUC [2276 AD]

A Nipponese engineering team re-develops the fusion-jet engine.

Continuous-boost fusion rockets explore the Solar System for the second time, especially the remains of many of the old settlements. However the time is not yet considered right by most Tellurian governments for re-expansion into the Solar System, as it is still possible to obtain metals and other materials from the sites of pre-Nex cities.

3051 AUC [2298 AD]

Materials and computing science finally recover enough that suits of powered armour, powered by miniature fusion generators can be built once more. However, no AI's or warbots have been built, or as far as most people are concerned will ever be built, and although.cybernetic replacement for lost limbs is allowed in most countries laws strictly limit the capabilities of these replacements.

3088 AUC [2335 AD]

The present day.
