NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS FROM THE GAME
This page contains details of various non-player characters who have appeared in The Last Enemy game so far, divided by location as follows:
Click on the section headings to return to the top of the page.
- Angelique
One of the children of the player characters, she is the best and most co-ordinated of them, and also the most attractive. She has straight black hair, dark eyes and high cheekbones. She has pale skin and long black hair. She likes hang-gliding, and prefers to dress mostly in black (though is showing no signs of becoming a Goth!). She collects things, all sorts of things, and has persuaded Damien to give her a room in the Museum for her discoveries.
- Beatrice
One of the children of the player characters, she is pretty with dark hair, blue eyes and pale skin. She is torn between wanting to be a snooty magic-using Lady (as she seems to see Esmée as being) and wanting to be a soldier and go out and fight things. She is quite strong, quite fast, and quite strong-minded. She seems to be very good at animal-handling and other skills of that general nature, and is sure that if she does become a soldier she will become a member of the Cavalry.
- Carl
One of the children of the player characters, he is short and muscular with dark hair, pale skin and very dark blue eyes. He is a magic-user, but also has leanings towards the military, being reasonably strong and fast. In terms of personality he is very sombre and serious; this appears to stem from the death of his hound, Tagaria, at the hands of the ninjas in 118 PPF. He seems to like building things.
- Chalice
The daughter of Beltaine and Tamarind, born at the same time as the Pattern-blooded bodies in which Brand and Deirdre were reborn. Unlike her flighty and artistic parents, she is very studious, and very much the scientist. As such she gets on well with Brand. She seems to have potential both in the power of the Trump, and also her mother's power of Voice.
- Duncan
Duncan is a child born of a surrogate mother, fathered by Tristan's body, but while he was allowing Brand to inhabit his mind for research purposes. As such he looks very much like a young Brand. He is strong, fast and fit. Although much more socialised than he was when Tristan found out about his existence (thanks in large part to Lucian's efforts), he still has poor social skills, and does not smile or laugh much.
- Eleanor
One of the children of the player characters, she is weakest, least fit and least co-ordinated of them, with rather an unlucky streak. She is rather strange-looking too, with swirling red-pupilled eyes (the patterns of which change slowly with time), pale skin, blonde hair, a thin build, pointed fingernails, and pronounced canine teeth. She is also a Souleater...
- Luther
One of the children of the player characters, he has black hair in a widows peak and swirling brown eyes the patterns of which change slowly with time. His fingernails are slightly claw-like and his canine teeth slightly pronounced (both of these are less so than in the case of Eleanor). His build seems average. He is interested in magic and is still very close to his mini-dragon, Salcilia. He is quite studious and seems to love reading more than almost anything else, but also seems to like growing things, and has a garden.
- Moins
Mother of Llewella, with Oberon, and, apparently, the full sister of Oberon. They apparently had Llewella as some form of precaution against the redheads. Her fate is unknown, but she was apparently associated with Rebma or its Pattern. She was the Queen of Rebma before Vialle was born, and disappeared a few hundred years ago - at about the same time as Oberon, in fact - and has not been seen since.
- Morgana
A sister of Oberon who was apparently associated with the Ht'gon-An Rit Pattern in some fashion. She was killed by Finndo long ago (or at least, thank to his shapeshifting powers, part of Finndo), and killed that part of Finndo in return. She was young-looking and elfin in appearance, with a slight build and a distinct resemblance to Oberon (hard as that may be to imagine!). Her body wears a long court dress in a very old style and some jewellery in the same style as the Crown Jewels of Amber. Her hair is darkish red (the same colour as that of Oberon).
- Octavius
One of the children of the player characters, he is very handsome with dark hair, blue eyes, and an average build. Very good at drawing and artistic things from an early age, he is a Trump artist, and has a powerful mind.
- Ossian
A brother of Oberon associated with Tir-Na Nog'th or its Pattern. A thirty foot-tall, thin, beardless man with long white hair and a distinct resemblance to Oberon, Ossian sleeps peacefully in the throne room of Tir-Na Nog'th. He lies in a thirty foot long bed that stands on the dais where the throne should be, his long white hair spread out on the pillow. Above him is a huge stained-glass window showing an hourglass about half spent. Two normal-sized ravens sit on the bedposts, and look directly at visitors in that way that Tir-Na Nog'th visions tend not to.
- The Unicorn of Amber
An ancient, powerful, bad-tempered entity, apparently many millions of years old, responsible for killing Anurerishkigal, creating demonkind, the Courts of Chaos and, when it became bored with them, Amber, manipulating Dworkin to do so. It did all this because it was bored. The Unicorn seems only to see the big picture, or fundamental levels, never anything in-between, and so does not appreciate the little things in life. Apparently when Dworkin met her for the first time she was an explorer. She showed him the Jewel and together they explored its potential and created a New Order. She chose Random as the King of Amber after Patternfall because she thought he would be "the most amusing option"; this is not information which has been released to the general population of Amber.
The life force of the Unicorn is unlike that of any other being which the player characters have encountered, rather than simply having a fixed store of life force which is depleted over time, she seems to have a store of life force which is constantly replenished from the general universal flow. This would, presumably, make her truly immortal. She also seems to have very powerful abilities to move through and change shadow, apparently linked to the powers of the Jewel of Judgement, the Pattern and the Trump.
The player characters convinced her that there was value to be had in the little things in life, and so she has gone off to be human...
- Lady Alana Ashlurian
Tristan's successor to the post of Lord Legislator. She turns out to be quite progressive too.
- Lady Jessica Charenton
An Amber noblewoman who turned out to be a shapeshifted impostor, and actually one of Tristan's escapees, Perrund Burin, an arsonist.
- Ambrose Clemens
Nephew of Corelius Clemens.
- Lord Cedric Clemens
Head of House Clemens who married Justine a few years after Oberon dumped her. Dead of old age by the time of Patternfall.
- Corelius Clemens
Nominally head of the house, but since being rather aged he leaves most of the actual running to his Kail, Lara, Judith and Ambrose Clemens.
- Judith Clemens
Daughter of Corelius Clemens.
- Kail Clemens
Son of Corelius Clemens.
- Kalen Clemens
A member of House Clemens and an assistant to the Mayor of Amber. He was assassinated by Ninjas, and it turns out he had been replaced by one of Tristan's escapees, shapeshifted.
- Lara Clemens
Daughter of Corelius Clemens.
- Sasha Clemens
Daughter of Cedric and Justine. Dead of old age by the time of Patternfall.
- Lady Anise du Motier
Flora's Chief Secretary in Castle Amber.
- Roberto Fulleri
The leader of the attack on Bleys when he first returned to Amber in 113 PPF, while he was helping in the temporary evacuation of Amber, and a member of Damien's Anti-Bleys Campaign. It seems that a couple of the main leaders of the campaign fell ill (though it has since turned out that they were poisoned) and Roberto, a very low-ranking member of House Fulleri, was the person upon whom the leadership then fell. He convinced some of the campaign (the hot-headed elements) that now was the time to Strike, while Bleys was distracted with the evacuation, regardless of what Damien had said - Damien was Wrong. So off they went to have a go. And died. From what Damien has since found out is Roberto may have been replaced by an impostor, though whether one of Tristan's escapees, shapeshifted, or from some other source remains unclear...
- Thomas Fulleri
A low-ranking member of House Fulleri.
- Lady Yvette Fuleri
An Amberite noble lady who talked to Tamarind about music, obviously trying to chat him up, at the ball for the Chaos Ambassador in 103 PPF.
- Justine
Tristan's mother. Oberon's wife who replaced Pauletta, Random's mother, once he'd became tired of her. Dead of old age by the time of Patternfall.
- Lord Rieck
An Amber nobleman with whom Esmée went riding at one point.
- Lucien Venway
The man who runs Beltaine's household in Amber. He is a combination of surrogate grandfather, mother-hen, confidant and teacher. Silver-haired and serene, nothing phases Lucien. He has served long years in Castle Amber and seen and heard it all. He was trapped inside Beltaine's Tir-Na Nog'th bubble for fifteen years, along with Beltaine and Owen, but seems to have largely recovered from that experience.
- Lord Maximillian Urien
An Amber nobleman who turned out to be a shapeshifted impostor, and actually one of Tristan's escapees, Kenton Jeritic, a slaver.
- Agrippina
Sebek's personal trainer, the person in charge of looking after him. She comes from a Roman Shadow outside the Golden Circle called Shadow Plinius. She was a gladiator during the reign of Nero, but subsequently took to training velociraptors and other wild beasts for the Circus. She is fiercely devoted to Sebek, although she is often at odds with Damien over the best way to look after him. Despite this, she and Damien have developed an on-off affair over recent years - they argue about Sebek, get drunk together, fall into bed, and then pretend it never happened the next morning. She lives in one wing of the Priory, furnished in the Roman style. She is well known around Amber, and often takes other animal training jobs in her spare time, although she is rich enough not to need to, having won several fortunes betting on Sebek at the Circus Maximus. Agrippina is about 5'4", with short black curly hair, in her early thirties.
- Dr Aldari
One of the doctors in the Amber Castle Infirmary.
- Amanda
Formerly one of Esmée's ladies-in-waiting, since sacked for incompetence.
- Barvald
One of Sebek's attendants, mainly responsible for keeping him fed and maintaining the Velocidrome.
- Biddy
A ringleader of the anti-housing-redevelopment rioters is a big guy with a shaven head and a scar on his face.
- Captain Blevins
Captain of the Amber Navy ship the HMS Spear.
- Boris
Nurse Simmons' luckless fiancé, kidnapped to ensure her compliance with the kidnapping of the children, who was later found dead at a house in the City.
- Brian
A stable boy in a tavern called the Drowned Rat, which is in one of the rougher areas of the Amber City docks. He is a teenaged lad, who was found asleep in a pile of straw.
- Childers
Damien's butler, who replaced Samuels after his unfortunate death.
- Sir Ernest Wallis Budge
Archaeologist and linguist. Damien first encountered him in Shadow when searching for the mummy case of Nitocris, and later imported him to join the staff of the rebuilt Museum of Arts and Antiquities. Budge is in charge of translating the ancient texts looted from Chaos.
- Felicity
A chamber maid in Damien's household, who also happens to run Damien's intelligence network, whether Damien thinks he needs one or not. She is frequently entrusted by Damien for sensitive missions.
- Giles
Brand's Servant. He is an old man.
- Mr Giles
The Librarian of the Amber Museum of Arts and Antiquities.
- Dr Grenville
Senior Curator at the Amber Museum of Arts and Antiquities.
- Isobel
A woman of astounding beauty from out of shadow. Oberon's wife, before she and Tristan fell in love and eloped into shadow, where she became Tristan's wife instead. She dies of old age before being brought back from the land of the dead, physically young, but mentally another Beloved Zombie.
- Jaheira
Ibrahim's adoptive sister, with whom he was raised. Having collected some appropriate stock out in Shadow, Jaheira has turned her hand to breeding horses, at which she excels. There is some minor rivalry between Random and Julian over the use of her best horses for Amber's light cavalry and Julian's Arden rangers. Jaheira has established a home for herself in a fairly sizeable ranch/farm between Amber city and forest Arden. A tall and graceful woman with a piercing gaze and an undoubted air of command about her. Jaheira appears to be between 40 and 50 years of age (although is actually much older, coming from a shadow where people age at about a third of the rate of shadow Earth folk), but is still strikingly beautiful, with long black hair and very dark brown eyes.
- Josephus
Damien's night-watchman at the Museum, who has one arm of amorphous red stuff. He apparently had a fatal heart attack which caused the burning down of the old Museum.
- Kerinne
One of Sebek's attendants. She acts mainly as his publicity agent and social secretary.
- Marianne
Damien's former nurse from Shadow Medmenham. An incredibly ancient West Indian woman who trundles around in a bath chair, she is neither as senile nor as deaf as she pretends, and is reckoned by many to be the true head of Damien's household.
- Dr Antonia Mesmer
A doctor in the Amber Castle Infirmary, allegedly came from the Golden Circle shadow of Appalonia, a place noted for the quality of the medics it produces, who turned out to be a shapeshifted impostor, and actually one of Tristan's escapees, Lillina Jadrax, a notorious poisoner. She was killed by ninjas.
- Nurse Ratchett
One of the nurses of the children, killed by ninjas while defending them in 118 PPF.
- Randor
A Castle guard who was shapeshifted to look like Evander by one of the Council for Victory, from whom the Evander 'personality overlay' was removed by Fiona, after which he had a lot of sick leave.
- Captain Roberts
Captain of the Amber Navy ship the HMS Indefatigable.
- Samuels
Damien's butler from shadow Medmenham who he imported to Amber. He was run over and killed by a carriage in Amber soon after Damien was blood cursed in 113 PPF.

One of the nurses of the children, who betrayed them and aided in their kidnapping following the kidnapping of her fiancée, Boris.
- Trevor
An anti-redevelopment rioter in Amber.
- Dr Udawa
Senior Curator at the Amber Museum of Arts and Antiquities.
- Nurse Winstanley
One of the nurses of the children, killed by ninjas while defending them in 118 PPF.
- Leander Clemens
He appears to be in his 30s (shadow Earth-wise) and bears a definite familial resemblance to Richard Clemens, who is his father. Someone Tristan knew before he fled Amber, and who disappeared when Oberon started persecuting the Clemen's family - it was widely thought Oberon had killed them. He now lives in Clemenstown, on the opposite edge of the continent of Amber to Amber City. When the group met him he was dressed in clothes made of rough homespun-type cloth dyed in natural-type colours, but they looking well-made and functional. Over them he wore an old-looking, but well cared-for breastplate and he had an old-looking but well-made sword and dagger at his belt.
- Richard Clemens
He looks, in shadow earth terms, in his 50s, with a stocky build, greying hair and blue eyes.
- King Phillipe of Diega
A stern-looking man who appears to be (in shadow Earth terms) in his forties; he has grey-shot black hair, piercing dark eyes and sharp but handsome features.
- Queen Maria of Diega
She appears roughly the same age as her husband, but her hair remains entirely dark; her features are pretty rather than beautiful and she is rather moon-faced; her eyes are a clear, penetrating hazel.
- Captain de Montoyez
Captain of the guard of Castle Diega, in shadow Diega.
- Captain de Rodriguez
The Diega liaison officer with Prince Gerard.
- The Harbourmaster
Of Diega Harbour.
- Princess Derizi
The ruler of shadow Caradan. Her skin is royal blue and her hair is golden. She appears to be about twenty-five, and she is a babe.
- Chuak
One of Princess Derizi's courtiers.
- Miranda
The commander of the castle guard in Tristan's Castle Corvallin. She is now in her late forties, a woman of elegant beauty with short cropped, dark hair, now going grey. She is a charismatic and resourceful leader.
- Rhys
Steward of Tristan's Castle Corvallin. a short wiry man with red hair and beard. He is a wise manager and has no trouble with seeing to the day-to-day running of the castle. He is very outspoken, and has a slightly off-colour sense of humour.
- The Harbourmaster
Of the Liberty Islands free-port visited by the group. Not a dodgy criminal at all, oh no.
- Jethro
A dockyard worker in the Liberty Islands free-port visited by the group.
- Mistress Marianne
The local sorceress in the Liberty Islands free-port visited by the group, so they were told, though they never actually met her.
- Askan al-Hamir
The captain of the 'Firespirit', from the shadow of G'hal-ne-Husten. He is old, swarthy, and twisted as if by injury. His left arm is hanging by a thread; he makes a show of it. It is held on by silver wires. He only has one eye. He is a powerful sorcerer, as shadow sorcerers go.
- Mr Alarius
A mate on the 'Firespirit'. A swarthy type.
- Mr Alkura
A mate on the 'Firespirit'. A swarthy type.
- Mr Carag
A mate on the 'Firespirit'. A swarthy type.
- Anurerishkigal
Some sort of malevolent entity which returned from the land of the dead inside Fiona.
- General Barisios
The military ruler of the shadow which is now known as Renaissance, he took over after the breakdown of society there brought about by the spread of Cold Babies. The General is an elderly, hook-nosed man. At about the time the player characters showed up in his shadow he was ill from the stresses of ruling the place, and was quite happy to hand over command to a worthy successor - Colonel Nazir (that is, Ibrahim).
- Professor Branarien
Apparently a shadow of Fiona who was doing research in the shadow now known as Renaissance, allegedly into finding a cure for Cold Baby Syndrome, but in fact into the structure of the soul and the black memory-sparks from the land of the dead, with the search for a cure as a cover. She looked like an older version of Fiona, apparently in her forties, and wore an immaculate lab coat over a military uniform. She died thanks to a magical booby-trap which was triggered when the player characters interrogated her.
- Carmine
The mother of Tristan's son, Duncan, apparently a professional surrogate mother. She is blonde and appears to be in her twenties. She did not care at all about Duncan; he was just another contract to her.
- Evelyn Carnahan
Librarian and Egyptologist from Shadow, former lover of Damien.
- Chief Inspector Elspeth Carpen of the Antiquities Police
The person who signed Damien over to the care of Dr Melgar.
- Duke Runcival FitzSimmons of Urthe
A fair-haired gentleman with a moustache so ferociously waxed you could spark flints off it. He wears a gaudy, high-collared cavalry officer's uniform, obscured by a tasteless profusion of gold braid and sundry decorations which clanked as he walked. He commanded a division of troops for Shadow Roynova during the Bellus Draconis of 71-72 PPF, but was roundly defeated and had to flee. The Archduchess of Roynova is his niece, and he fancied himself the power behind the throne, so she sent him to Amber as Roynova's Ambassador so that she could get on with ruling the Archduchy in peace. He was unfortunately killed in a duel with Lord Damien Mortlake not long after coming to Amber.
- Doctor Hanif
The chief doctor of the place where Duncan was conceived. He is a bald fellow, apparently in his thirties.
- Dr I. Jones
Archaeologist whose Shadows are frequently encountered by Damien.
- Klerothos the Red
A warrior from the Chaos end of the universe who rides through shadow on the back of a rhino-sized sabre-toothed tiger, coloured blood-red with purple tiger-stripes; this is a creature which can move through shadow under it own power. Klerothos wears black clothing like motorcycle leathers and carries a large lance/halberd. According to him he trained the tiger from cubhood, thus making it his mount, and gave the tiger a secret name, which he will not reveal to others. He is an enthusiastic warrior, and could be a described as being a bit of a lunatic.
He helped Amber against the Unicorn-instigated invasion of shadow-shifting tigers, and although he wished to assay the Pattern as the price for his help, was eventually convinced that this was a bad idea, and instead attuned to the Impossigon.
- Lydia
One of Flora's secretaries in shadow Earth.
- Dr William Melgar
The shadow medic who looked after Damien while her mind was in the land of the dead.
- Chief Inspector Alarne Molin
The person who signed Altair over to the care of Dr Udaloy.
- Dr Morgendorfer
The Director of the hospital where various people returned from the land of the dead. It is a large, high-tech medical establishment, a University of New York teaching hospital, and has an Evelyn Flaumel Memorial Wing. It is situated in the town of Lawndale, about five minutes drive from Flora's mansion. Dr Morgendorfer is white, middle-aged, and rather worried-looking.
- Douglas Murray
Amateur Egyptologist in Shadow who made the mistake of buying the mummy case of Nitocris while she was still in it. Suffered horribly from the casket's curse before donating it to the British Museum.
- Natasha
Altair's First Mate on the 'Morningstar'.
- Colonel Nazir
A shadow of Ibrahim from the shadow now known as Renaissance, he was the second-in-command of General Barisios. Ibrahim took his place and used that position to help restore the shadow to normal after the source of the Cold Babies was found and closed. Tristan determined that the real Colonel Nazir in this Shadow was in fact marooned on a desert island and will never be found.
- Nefermoseret
Nitocris' niece, or strictly speaking a Shadow of Nitocris' original and now long dead niece, and ruler of Shadow Memphis. A thin, delicately beautiful woman in her late twenties, she is an accomplished sorceress and charioteer, and a rather more enlightened monarch than Nitocris ever was.
- Nitocris
Reincarnated Egyptian queen, lover of Damien and former host to a portion of Nyarlathotep. Now a Beloved Zombie.
For more information, see The Curse Of Nitocris.
- Paxman, Cornwell and Rand
Flora's lawyers in shadow Earth.
- Lord Sharrock
Ruler of shadow Chershan.

The original servant of the Anurerishkigal entity.
- Dr Travis Udaloy
The shadow medic who looked after Altair while her mind was in the land of the dead.
- An un-named noble from the Golden Circle shadow of Roynova
Who Jaheira took a shine to for a while, until he proved to be a git.
- Anianke of the Royal House
A Chaosite mind found inside the Souleater, Aximia. Now dead.
- The Gatekeeper
A large (three metres tall or so) insectoid thing, black, with a long head flared at the back and tapering to a snout at the front; its body is humanoid, though chitinous, and its arms are long, and have more joints than they really should. This was the first creature the group talked to upon entering Chaos.
- Goliash
A Chaosite mind found inside the Souleater, Aximia. Now dead.
- Lexand Prometheus
A Chaosite who led the group to the heart chamber where the humanoids of the Courts of Chaos committed suicide.
- Merodach Prometheus
'The first and last King of Chaos', who presided over the Council for Victory and the death of Chaos.
- Lady Ranghell
A Amberite mind, but raised in Chaos found inside the Souleater, Aximia. Now dead.
- An Unnamed Chaosite
A corpse-coloured man in black armour astride a rotting bat-winged horse, whom the group met while entering the Courts of Chaos for the first time, along The Path of Madness.
- Ciatlon Vathek
A Chaosite whom the group bullied into helping them when they were in Chaos for the first time. He was tall and thin, with harsh angular features, long black hair, fingernails like claws and long canine teeth. He died with all the other humanoids of Chaos.
