FINNDO

Description :

Finndo's picture from the Amber Castle Library

Finndo dressed in an immaculately cut plain black uniform with a red sash, a large sword (the same as that in a picture from the library, which is the picture of Finndo from the Amber DRPG Rulebook), a dagger and a pistol at his belt. For combat in more primitive shadows he wore black plate armour and carried a number of weapons. These included his Pattern blade, a large black metal truncheon and a crossbow.

His personal symbol was a scarlet ground with, in the centre, a white circle containing a black unicorn silhouette facing to the left. This formed both his flag, and the design on the back of his Trumps.

Finndo's Symbol

Finndo was a full Advanced Initiate of the Pattern, a Trump Artist, knew Sorcery and Empowerment, and possessed a Pattern blade. In terms of other capabilities he was very strong willed (more so than Gerard or any of the group), stronger than anyone in the group but Gerard, had more stamina than anyone and was faster than anyone apart from Gerard and Caitlin.

Background And History:

In the library there is "The History of Finndo, Prince of Amber", a dusty and obviously very old tome, the biography of Finndo. It says that Finndo is the oldest son of Oberon; along with Benedict and Osric he is the son of Oberon and Cymnea. He was a loyal son for along time, being studious and also good at the ways of war, but also arrogant and stubborn - very like his father, in fact. He betrayed Amber over a noblewoman from the shadow of Begma, and supported Begma against Amber. Finndo then conducted a vendetta against the House Karm (a noble but non-royal family of Amber). He wiped out most of this family, although he still supported Oberon. His brother Osric (Benedict's younger brother) supported Finndo against Oberon's inevitable anger. And some years later Oberon sent Finndo and Osric off to fight a battle for Amber and it was reported they both died, heroically, in the defence of Amber against some powerful enemy out of shadow. However, the main reason they died seems to be because they had inadequate forces with them. But they did win the war. This was all well over ten thousand years ago. The book is hardly an unbiased account; there is definitely a leaning in the writing towards 'Oberon was right; Finndo was wrong'.

It appears that Finndo had spent the millennia since his apparent demise hiding from Oberon in the sealed off and separate region of shadow he created called De'Alund (where he was the Theocrat; scattered throughout the shadow are posters with Finndo in his black uniform with the red sash and across the bottom of the posters are a variety of slogans : 'Believe', 'Obey', 'Trust', 'Be Pure', 'The Theocrat is Watching'). In that time he also fathered a daughter, Lillian. The people of De'Alund are all highly loyal to Finndo (and Lillian), and are somewhat better than the normal run of shadow dwellers (De'Alund Troops have the following capabilities: Psyche :Human, Strength: Chaos, Endurance: Chaos, Warfare: Amber; they use Extra Hard auto-reloading weapons [2 points total]).

With the demise of Oberon he considered himself, as Oberon's oldest son, to be the rightful heir to the throne of Amber, and worked to take it by force, blockading Amber to starve it into submission, impress his strength on Amber and weaken Amber against him. He would not accept anything but complete and absolute control of Amber (as his right), but Gerard didn't feel that Finndo was fit to rule, from his actions, and from his having met him.

Gerard resisted Finndo (without, initially, knowing it was him), part of which resulted in the player characters being brought together in Amber. In the end, Finndo's daughter was taken hostage, and Finndo came to rescue her, shifting through shadow to inside the Amber Pattern room. Unfortunately, his coming was noticed, and Gerard brought through. After a brief scuffle (during which Finndo carefully avoided doing anything that might let Amberite blood fall on the Pattern), Gerard laid hands on him and broke his neck.

With Finndo dead, the army he was leading towards Amber was routed, having lost heart without him.

Finndo was buried in the crypts under the castle, in a small but solemn ceremony, befitting his status as a Prince of Amber.
