Alexander Stafford studied English at University College London, where he was recruited into MI5. He worked for MI5, assessing demographic information, for seven years, when he was selected as the only suitable candidate within the organisation for Project Shoggoth - an experimental super-agent production programme.
He underwent massive chemical and genetic treatment, along with extensive brainwashing, to turn him into the perfect agent for British Intelligence. Unfortunately, MI5 (being incompetent) totally overlooked his innate disgust at and revulsion to killing, which he had concealed from MI5 throughout his employment.
His first assignment was to infiltrate a DEMON base beneath Rouen in western France. Unfortunately, the KGB were infiltrating at the same time, and one of their operative, who Alexander knows only as Jean-Jaques, was about to reveal his identity to DEMON.
Alexander's control instructed him to liquidate Jean-Jaques, but he found that he could not bring himself to do so. He fled instead, as Jean-Jaques blew his cover. Now both MI5 and DEMON pursue him. Jean-Jaques is probably still working undercover in DEMON.
Alexander made his way to Liberia in west Africa, and smuggled himself aboard a banana boat bound for Boston in the USA, from where he made his way to New York, seeking to lose himself in the teeming mass of humanity there...
Alexander has a good ability to empathise with those around him, which is why he such an abhorrence of killing. He is definitely a ladies man; attractive and charming, though somewhat absent-minded.
What Alexander did not know about Project Shoggoth was that it was not so much about giving a human Shoggoth-like powers (resilience, regeneration, body mutability, shape shifting and the like), but about transferring a human mind into the body of Shoggoth-like creature MI5 had captured from Nazis after WWIII. In this they were successful, and needless to say want their experiment back. Of course, this means that somewhere there is Alexander Stafford's body inhabited by the mind of a Shoggoth...
The British government know where Alexander's parents and his siblings (brother John-James and sister Anne-Marie) live, and he is aware that they could be threatened to make him return to the fold. So far this has not occurred...
