Much of South America is divided differently to in the real world, as the Granadine Confederation (the predecessor of real world Columbia) broke up differently. Some names are still the same, however. Panama and another former part of the Granadine Confederation are French; both were ceded to them by the puppet Spanish government, or the post-colonial government.

There are still British, Dutch and French-controlled Guyanas.

Argentina

An Argentinean revolution gave it its independence from Spain and made it a separate state. This allowed in Welsh settlers. A highly ideological UER regime came to power in a bloody second revolution, leading to massacres and Union intervention that split Argentina into four states - New Wales, rump Argentina (an oligarchy), Gran Chaco and the Kingdom of Mapuche.

Brazil

Brazil is a part of the Comunidade Portuguese and although it has a good deal of internal autonomy has never been an independent nation, much like the Union-controlled parts of North America such as Hudsonia. Portugal's development of this relationship with its largest colony was influenced by Britain (and the Union) due to the close relationship between the two nations.

Brazil has a large non-Portuguese minority population descended from Catholics who immigrated into the country at the invitation of the Brazilian government after 1897. In particular there is a very large Polish population in the country, so that by the present day most Brazilian cities have at a 'Cidade Polonês' ['Polishtown'] area in them.

Because of Brazil's larger population, it now dominates the Comunidade Portuguese in most things, and certainly in terms of economy and population.

Charcas

Much the same as real world Bolivia.

Chile

Much the same as in the real world.

Dutch Guyana

A Dutch province on the northern coast of South America [equivalent to Suriname of the real world], it is a self-governing representative democracy within the Netherlands as a whole.

Although it has a relatively small population, Dutch Guyana has a strong economy based on agriculture and the exploitation of the rich alumium [aluminium], gold and oil reserves of the province. Much of the interior of the province remains largely untouched rainforest. This is protected and nurtured by the government, which licenses pharmaceutical companies to perform research within it and develop new drugs and so on based on compounds found there. In addition, there are a number of large pharmaceutical plantations within the province where specific medical plants are grown and processed.

Dutch Guyana is the most ethnically diverse and culturally vibrant part of the Dutch Empire, with a population made up of a mix of native people, Dutch settlers, and the descendants of African slaves and East Indians brought there as labourers.

Its capital is the small city of Paramaribo.

French Guyana

A French colony in South America, with an economy based largely on sea farming (formerly fishing) and gold mining. It is home to several agricultural research stations attempting to find ways to make the very poor soils of the region into productive farmland.

Gran Chaco

The North-west of real world Argentina, it is a dictatorial a state formed when Argentina was broken up by the Union.

Libertatia

The only surviving nation of a number founded by escaped slaves and other fugitives. Libertatia is a poor but highly democratic and fiercely independent state.

Libertatia is formed from what are effectively a set of city-states, each of which was founded by one group of escapees. Each one consists of the town or city itself along with a surrounding region of farmland that supports its population.

All of these city states are run along democratic principles, although the exact details of their government varies from state to state. Despite their democratic similarities there are nonetheless deep divisions between them in terms of religious, ethnic, linguistic and other attitudes. These are only overridden by their perceived need to stand together against a hostile outside world. Because of this Libertatia as a whole has evolved - through a process that has involved a great deal of civil strife and periodic conflicts - a form of government that provides for a nation state while reconciling the fact that the nation as a whole is socially fragmented. It is governed under what in the real world would be called a consociationalist system, that is one guaranteeing group representation while maintaining governmental stability, the survival of the power-sharing arrangements, the survival of democracy, and the avoidance of violence. Although imperfect, the Libertatian system does appear to work and systems based on it have been adopted in a number of other divided nations.

Libertatia has remained free partly because it has few resources outsiders might want, but also because all citizens are members of its Citizen Militias and as such are highly trained in jungle and guerrilla warfare. As part of this and due to the history of the country many Libertatians are more than a little xenophobic. Although the Citizen Militias make Libertatia highly resistant to invasion, the fact that Libertatia has no armed forces apart from them means the country has little in the way of force projection capability.

Libertatia used to be larger than its current size, stretching all the way to the Atlantic. However, its larger population relative to the real world led to deforestation of much of the country, which in turn led to a loss of useful farmland and so to famine. The worst-affected eastern parts of the country were able to persuade Libertatia to go to war against its neighbours to gain the farmland it needed to survive. However, Libertatia's Citizen Militias proved ill-equipped for this offensive type of war, and they were roundly defeated by those they attempted to invade, assisted by France. The eastern part of Libertatia was lost in this war and in the famine that followed in the remainder of the country, many died and many more fled into the surrounding countries to survive. This significantly depopulated the country, leaving the remaining population as a 'hard core' of true patriots (as they put it).

Libertatia is something close to an autarky in that it is self-sufficient in almost everything, and in particular food, with the exceptions being some types of luxuries and manufactured goods. However, it is also poor, has a generally low level of technology, and little manufacturing ability above a cottage industry level (even if some cottages make guns, drugs or autogyros). It does have some economic interaction with the outside world, consisting largely of drugs, either narcotics or medical ones extracted from rainforest organisms. It also makes money from certain new crops derived from jungle plants, and from training outsiders in farming, surviving and fighting in the jungle. It is rumoured that Libertatia also acts as a secret banking and information storage facilitator for companies and governments around the world [that is, as a sort of 'offshore bank' and 'data haven'].

The desire for self-sufficiency in food has led Libertatia to develop a number of innovative reforestation techniques, as well as ways to sustainably farm the rainforest, many based on methods used by the native peoples. Terraced fields are used where the terrain allows it. Libertatia's need for self-sufficiency in food has led to occasional disputes with their neighbouring nations over border incursions, where Libertatians 'accidentally' extend farmland into their territory. Transport within Libertatia is mainly by boat or autogyro, with the ... challenging .. terrain of the country meaning it possesses few roads.

The capital of Libertatia is the city of Pasto [in real world Columbia].

The official language of Libertatia is known as Libertatian, which is a creole made up mainly from English, Spanish and French, but also including some Portuguese and native American words and strong elements of West African grammar. However, many other languages are spoken in the country, with English, Spanish and French being the most common to the extent that they are effectively unofficial official languages.

The flag of Libertatia consists of a pair of crossed swords, representing the struggle for freedom, over a broken chain, representing the founding of the nation by escaped slaves and their finding freedom there. These are placed on a field of bright green representing the jungles and natural environment of Libertatia that has protected and sustained them.

The Kingdom of Mapuche

The very southern tip of Patagonia, in real world Argentina, formed when Argentina was broken up by the Union. It is ruled by a royal family descended from the native Spanish nobility.

New Wales (Cymru Newydd)

A parliamentary democracy formed by the actions of the Union to protect the people of Welsh descent living in Argentina when it became a fanatically UER regime in 1870. It makes up a section of real world southern Argentina, plus the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, and is a full member of the Union with a significantly larger Welsh population than old Wales in Britain. The political capital of New Wales is at Trerawson on the mainland of South America. However, its main military bases are on the Falkland Islands.

The people of New Wales originally left Britain to preserve Welsh language and culture, and as such they work hard to preserve these things, even if, now, within the context of the Union. [This is similar to what happened in the real world (more information from the same site or from the BBC), though a more extreme form of it.]

New Wales originally had a similar flag to those of the other British-settled parts of the Union, with a red dragon on the dark blue field of the Blue Ensign.

The first flag of New Wales

However, the Spanish population of New Wales objected to this, and the design was changed to a green field.

The second flag of New Wales

After further objections the flag was changed to the form is has kept to the present day, that of a red Welsh dragon on the pale blue and white-striped background of the previous Argentinean flag.

Paraguay

A struggling nation much the same as in the real world.

Peru

Never having recovered from its dictatorial Rationalist regime at the beginning of the 20th century, Peru is one of the poorest and most corrupt nations in South America.

Union Guyana

A former British settlement in South America, now a self-governing state within the Union. Its economy is based on agriculture (particularly sugar production) and mining of alumium ore and to a lesser extent the gold and diamond deposits within the state. It has some industry, mainly relating to alumiun processing.

Uruguay

Much the same the real world Uruguay, if rather bigger.
