THE FLOWER OF NING-RA

The Dragonyoung Base

The Base is divided into ten levels of varying height, all of which have walls of Def 10 and Body 10 (1 metre thick). [This link shows a cross-section through the base.]

The uppermost level is a hangar for the Dragon aircraft and barracks for troops. Six tunnels, each ten metres wide and with multiple security/blast doors, lead from the hangar to the outside, where there is a large landing field. From the hangar twelve elevators for aircraft lead down to the deeper levels of the base. These are large squares of metal which run up and down on rails at their corners. The lift wells are normally surrounded by metal safety rails. The barracks house hundreds of Dragonyoung troops. From the rear of the barrack area, several passenger lifts lead down to the deeper levels of the base. This level of the base is mostly 5 metres tall. On the landing field outside are several small buildings containing air traffic control, security and minor repair facilities. A watchtower, thirty metres high with a guard post and searchlights at the top, stands at each corner of the landing field. The spotlights on the towers, and others on the other buildings on the landing field, keep the whole field brightly lit at all times. On the top of the hill into which the base is set, inside its own security fence, is a 100 metre tall radio tower [which only Khai will be able to see if the party arrive at night].

[This link shows the parts of the base visible from outside; this one shows a plan of the top level of the base.]

Going down from the hangar level the next level is the 40 metre high military training area. This is simply a single large room whose feature and environment can be changed to simulate combat in any earthly environment. When the PC's are there it is configured to represent the deep scorching desert [which the PC's have never seen before and which could quite easily be taken as Hell by them]. Teams of Dragonyoung soldiers move and fight each other with real weaponry over the simulated desert.

Below the training level are four levels, -2 to -5, which comprise the main workshop and half the main living areas for the base [see map]. They are each 5 metres high. The aircraft lift from the hangar level goes down to the lowest of these levels. Surrounding the lift area on each level are fifteen maintenance bays. These are closed areas where four Dragons are stored and maintained. At least half of these bays will have [in addition to intact but 'sleeping' Dragons] one or more Dragons partially disassembled for repair [to the PC's they will appear to have been disembowelled]. Any fight here will have a good chance of spilling the clear, smelly dragons blood [highly inflammable jet fuel] across the floor where it can be ignited by a stray shot or use of power. All disassembled aircraft will have at least two mechanics working on them, with others looking over the intact aircraft. Also on this level are storerooms, where the PC's will find many bizarre things and several caskets. However, none of them are marked by anything resembling a flower. Next to the main hangar and connected to it by doors which stretch from floor to ceiling is a huge, and very noisy [the PC's have never heard anything as loud as this place], machine shop, which will be completely incomprehensible to the characters. The nearest approximation will be that the Dragonyoung [most of whom are in protective suits] are worshipping evil metal gods as they work the machinery [lathes, drills, milling machines, cranes, presses and most other types of manufacturing equipment, much of it computer controlled]. Near the centre of each of these levels (and also on levels -1 and -6 to -9) is a service core. This contains elevators, air conditioning ducts, water and sewage pipes and power and communications cables, linking all the levels to the power plant on level -10 and the life support machinery on level -9. The rest of these levels is composed of living quarters, with women and children as well as the soldiers who inhabit most of the rest of the base. However, the PC's lack of camouflage skin will make them stand out from the crowd, apart from Tor, who can easily disguise himself as a local. However, if this should be attempted, it should be noted that all areas of the base are monitored by security computers (it is a descendant of a military installation, after all) and the inhabitants all carry miniature security transponders, so there is a fair chance [roll 14- when a PC moves from one area of the base to another] of anyone attempting to sneak around being caught.

Levels -6 and -7 of the base consist of half living quarters, which are identical to those described above, and half laboratories. These levels are each 5 metres high. [This link goes to a map of these levels.] These are completely incomprehensible to the PC's, and like the machine shops could easily be taken as the Dragonyoung worshipping strange idols. The only feature of real interest in the labs is that in one lab are the remains of the older sisters of Rei and Sha who vanished several years ago, preserved in large bottles [they were captured by Dragons when they strayed too far from home and have been experimented upon and dissected after being killed - the scientists are still baffled by their abilities].

Level -8 of the base is 20 metres high, and consists entirely of a park. This is the part of the base which the PC's will find the most comprehensible, although still strange as it is obviously enclosed, and none of the plants there are of types they recognise [they are un-mutated, unlike the ones on the surface]. Also the growth of plants in the park is far richer than the growth of plants on the surface [as the soil in the base is un-blighted, unlike that on the surface].

Level -9 is also 20 metres high, and holds the life support machinery for the whole base. Like the laboratories and machine shops, it is totally incomprehensible to the characters, full of throbbing machinery at which the Dragonyoung appear to be worshipping. Damage to this place could be used as a diversion to allow the PC's to escape or succeed in their mission, if they could find out how vital it is to the Dragonyoung.

Connecting tunnels to other Dragonyoung bases go off in all four directions from levels -2, -4 and -6. These consist of power and communication lines plus tunnels for passenger and cargo pods to travel down.

Radiation Hazard SymbolAssuming the PC's make their way to the Reactor complex, [the walls of the Reactor area are Def 12, Body 25 (8 metres thick)]. they will be detected as soon as they enter [there are small boxes with cylinders on their fronts in the corners of all the rooms - security cameras] and troops sent in to deal with them with gas and smoke grenades [the troops will attempt to sneak up on the PC's and gain bonuses from surprise]. The reactor complex is divided into two levels, the upper of which contains the control room and switchgear; the lower contains storerooms and maintenance equipment. [This link goes to a plan of the upper level of the reactor complex, while this one goes to a plan of the lower level.]

The storeroom of the Reactor complex contains racks of caskets, all labelled with the flower of Ning-Ra and weighing about 400kg [Strength 20+ to lift]. Inside each casket, packed in foam, are six small cylinders, each of which is also labelled with the flower, and inside each cylinder [should the PC's look] are six small rods of dull grey, very heavy metal [some isotope of Uranium or Plutonium]. The PC's should realise by now that they have found what they after, and take some stuff. They should also realise that this place is a huge fount of evil with its plentiful use of metal.

NOTE : If the PC's load up with the radioactive materials, and if they take the rods of radioactive material out of the cylindrical cans and put them too close together, it is important to remember that they will NOT explode - they will just generate a lot of heat and melt into slag. It would be wise to drop them if this happens.
