Molinya unparalyses Mikhail by a combination of slapping and subtle electrical jolts, and starts to interrogate him. He is reluctant to talk, so Molinya comes up with a game using the roulette wheel - he is dragged over and held on the table. She tells him that if black comes up and Mikhail doesn't talk then he will be hurt; if it comes up red he doesn't get asked anything. She spins the roulette wheel. It comes up black. Mikhail refuses to talk. Molinya uses his own gun and blows off the third finger of his right hand. He screams in pain. Akula looks worried as blood splashes onto him, and begins to diffuse through his watery form. Molinya spins the wheel again. Black a second time. Still Mikhail refuses to talk, but is much more scared this time. Molinya blows off the third finger of his left hand this time. Akula expresses concern over her tactics.

The police (who Baba Yaga noticed pulling up outside, in force) burst in through the front and back door and everyone is arrested. Molinya shows her police ID and gives a statement that the gun went off twice accidentally while she was questioning a suspect; apparently she has something of a reputation for this kind of thing, but strangely no real action has been taken against her. As some of the police try to leave the building, they too are affected by Baba Yaga's fog (fortunately none of them seem trigger-happy types) so the rest stay in the casino. Akula and Molinya deny knowing anything about the fog.

In the back alley outside, peeping in through a window, Baba Yaga starts to produce a second fog, this time luminous green and designed to put people to sleep. She feeds it into the club through an open window.

Napalm wakes up in an alley, to shouts of fear from further down the alley. Through her hazy drunken vision she sees three men who seem about to set fire to a figure on the ground. Napalm staggers down the alley and as a lit match drops from the fingers of one of the attackers and the figure on the floor starts to burn she pulls the flames onto herself and sheathes herself in fire. One of the thugs draws a gun and fires on her but the bullets are destroyed by the fire around her. She tries to fire on the gun but due to her drunken lack of control, succeeds in killing two of the three, and blowing up the gun. The third attacker runs screaming down the alley, his hair on fire. Napalm puts out the fires and helps the victim of the attack (now going into shock) up and staggers off down the street with him.

Back in the casino the green mist starts to seep around the door to the gents toilet and to affect everyone. People start to fall asleep. Akula flees the building down the sink and through the plumbing. Molinya goes to the ladies toilet, turns into a lightning elemental and leaves the building through a window. But even so she is affected by the fog outside and takes a while to recover.

Baba Yaga sneaks into the building (she is immune to her own fog) but cannot find Akula or Molinya and so leaves and starts to disperse the fogs. Molinya goes back into the building and pretends to be asleep along with everyone else when the other police who were waiting outside enter the building.

Molinya gives her statement and then she and Akula go home. Baba Yaga returns to her hut, hiding behind a streetlamp close by the casino.

DATE : 4th September 1996

It is raining. Perhaps Granny's Summer is over.

NEWS :

Mother Bear, Akula, Molinya and General Winter wake up in their various dwellings and seeing the news all head for the police station. Akula and Mother Bear make excuses to their respective employers. Molinya travels to work via phone line, travelling as electricity.

Baba Yaga wakes up and goes in search of a market, shopping for chickens. Who knows why?

Napalm wakes up in an alley next to a singed man. She leaves him and goes to the Afghan Veterans Foundation soup kitchen for breakfast.

At the police station the group members present are told that all the Mafia men have been released without questioning thanks to timely visits by a number of high-priced lawyers.

A report from Lt Kulin, the Police's military liaison, tells us that no one uses the mix of chemicals that killed the man in the river, Barsan - the chemicals are not ones which would be used together, anyway, because they counteract each other. However, there are definite similarities between the poisons which killed Barsan and residues found in the archive building, presumably from the woman in the biohazard armour.

They are also told that copies of the stolen military records from the archive building do exist, and are being located for us.

Baba Yaga finds a market fairly and after a little haggling buys five chickens with two ancient silver coins (worth much more than their silver content, but she doesn't know that). Watched sceptically by the stallholder feeds the remaining hens with magic seeds which will make all but one of them lay golden eggs. The last one will lay Faberge eggs which will hatch living mechanical birds.

Napalm finishes eating at the Veterans Foundation and phones Molinya. She asks if she is to be arrested. Captain Ostranko produces an arrest warrant for Napalm but only for questioning about her act; he doesn't seem too bothered about the death one "one more raghead terrorist," as he puts it. Napalm agrees to be arrested if they get her some dinner. She will meet the others at the police Station Mother Bear visited last night, at the opposite end of the Botanical Gardens, near to where Barsan lived.

Baba Yaga attempts to contact the others using the headset she was given and though she gets through, thinks she is talking to spirits or something, despite the efforts of Mother Bear to disabuse her of this notion. They tell her to meet them at the police station also. Baba Yaga finds a nearby police car and buys a street map from them with a chicken (again after a bit of haggling) and after tearing all the pages out to see how it all fits together, heads for the police station.

Napalm reaches the police station first and buzzes the area around the VDNKh (All Russia Exhibition Centre) while waiting for the others. They eventually arrive and Napalm flies down to join them. She goes into Molinya's custody as they go in, but stays in flaming form, hovering in the air and de-flaming parts of herself as necessary. A uniformed officer escorts them to the canteen (which looks over the car park), a smoky, shabby room with a fat slovenly woman with a cigarette serving behind the counter. Despite this, Napalm is bought a very large dinner which she quickly eats.

After a short time Lt Alena Mikhailovich Bodonova, a stocky greying blonde tired-looking woman in her 40's wearing a cheap blouse jacket and skirt, arrives and after introductions escorts the group to a small shabby meeting room (also looking over the car park). She lights up a cigarette and produces a large file on Barsan. He comes from a broken home and has basically been involved in crime since his pre-teen years; he was arrested and wanted for lots of crimes but had only served short terms in prison. He is deeply mixed up in the Russian Mafia, in particular the Chechen branch of the mob. She also gives the party last known address, but given that the place was raided, doesn't expect it will be of much use.

It is felt by Baba Yaga and Akula that Lt Bodonova is not telling us everything she knows, and they say as much, so General Winter produces a large amount of cash to bribe her (a month's police salary or so, Molinya sees). The cash somehow vanishes, and Lt Bodonova then tells us the name of a recent girlfriend of Barsan's (Valentina Staroi) and gives us her address near the Dmitrovskya Metro station in an old Communist tower block, which is apparently recognisable by the large mural of workers toiling happily in the fields covering one outside wall.

Baba Yaga curses the money General Winter produced and we leave. We go to a nearby public telephone and after ringing the police station, Molinya goes up the line to the police exchange and after intimidating the operator, finds out that Lt Bodonova is now making a call. Molinya listens to the call and hears Lt Bodonova telling a man that we were asking questions about Barsan and other recent events. The man thanks Lt Bodonova, and promises that there will be a little extra in her usual pay packet this month. Molinya finds out that the call is being made to the Olympic Penta Hotel, near the Olympic sports complex and the archive building.

The party fly to the hotel immediately.

En route to the hotel the group (except Napalm who doesn't have a headset) get a message "You are urgently needed at the Lubyanka - the supervillains from the archive raid are attacking there."
